In Fallout 76 there is plenty of lore and background information if you search long and thoroughly. This also applies to the new Vault 51, which appears in the Battle Royale mode Nuclear Winter.
What is Vault 51? This Vault was newly introduced with the new Battle Royale mode Nuclear Winter in Fallout 76. Vault 51 no longer has a supervisor, and therefore the survivors from Vault 76 are supposed to fight it out in a hearty Battle Royale until only one remains and takes control. The mode itself is now so popular, that it will remain permanently after its testing.
What sounds like a fun reason for a light-hearted Battle Royale match, however, has solid lore backgrounds.
Huge Lore about the Battle Royale Vault
This is how Vault 51 is introduced: In a huge video, YouTuber Oxhorn shows what can be discovered about Vault 51 in Fallout 76. Some of this even outside of Battle Royale.
He first learns something about Vault 51 by opening two mysterious crates and shortly thereafter finds the body of the supervisor from Vault 51. On it is written:
- Distract him (done)
- Jump into the other crate (done)
- Pray to God that I survive (done)
- Find someone from 76 (done)
- Kill ZAX

The note about ZAX was found earlier – but it was assumed that it was a reference to Fallout 3. However, Oxhorn finds even more information about Vault 51.
In the Vault register at Vaultec University, he discovers a recently unlocked entry about Vault 51. It states that Vault 51 aims to see how tribal behavior of humans develops without “something” while being guided by an experimental “something”.
Apparently, ZAX is now in Vault 51 and is a rogue that the supervisor wanted to eliminate – but can no longer do so. Instead, players now amusingly compete in ZAX’s murderous Battle Royale to become the supervisor themselves…
His story turns into a treasure hunt through the entire wasteland. Those who do not want to experience everything themselves can watch it here in a video by YouTuber Oxhorn. He has researched and explored everything and then uploaded a 90-minute mammoth video on YouTube.
How Players React
What do the fans say? Oxhorn’s video is well-received by fans. On the one hand, it contains according to many players an excellent story revolving around the fate of the mysterious Vault 51. Especially the uncovering of secrets from the records of the past is what attracts many fans in every Fallout game.
Furthermore, the evil AI ZAX is a classic villain for many Fallout fans that repeatedly appears in the Fallout series. Its reappearance in Fallout 76 is gladly welcomed.
Others praise that this way they can finally learn everything and do not have to wander through the game world for hours or unlock many levels in Battle Royale. However, the latter frustrates some players who would have liked an alternative method to the Battle Royale grind to directly experience the lore of Vault 51 in the game.
What do you think of the story of Vault 51? Have you figured it out in the game or is this video enough for you?
It is probably due to chance that all this can even be discovered. Because Fallout 76 was originally not supposed to have a Battle Royale mode.
