After 28 years, a well-known disaster movie from the 90s is getting a sequel. MyMMO author Linda associates it with a childhood fear, and fans are looking forward to the new film.
Which movie is this about? Twisters is the sequel to a disaster film from 1996. The film is produced by the creators who are also behind the popular franchises Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones. It is set to hit theaters on July 19, 2024.
The sequel was introduced with Daisy Edgar Jones (Fresh) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) at the Super Bowl. The two actors take on the roles of two “storm chasers” who venture dangerously close to storms and tornadoes.
That this is still quite dangerous after nearly 30 years is shown by the first trailer for the sequel:
Especially fans of the classic from the 90s were probably a bit confused by this trailer. Because in many ways, the trailer already resembles Twister. However, it quickly became clear that this is a sequel and not a remake.
The trailer reminds me mainly of a great fear from my childhood, which the first part caused back then. I watched the film when I was in elementary school, and I wouldn’t recommend that to anyone today.
While I learned what tornadoes are through Twister, I also developed quite a fear of strong winds. Similarly, many people express in their comments (via YouTube) their memories associated with Twister:
- BuckyBarnesATL writes: “My 12-year-old self back in 1996 is so excited about this. I’ve always wished they would make another one.”
- eurydicefiori865 writes: “The cow that flies over the road in the first film is still iconic.”
- user-jb3ci7qn6q writes: “I admit it, that’s one of the VHS tapes I watched over and over again as a kid.”
Twisters will be a sequel and not a remake: Even though the trailer includes a few similar scenes, the story will be a continuation of the first part.
Much is still unknown about the story. However, a young storm chaser who tests new technologies and studies storms encounters the charming social media star who also works as a storm chaser.
In the trailer, you see how the new storm chasers use modern technology to make the most of the moment. For example, they drill deep into the ground to secure their vehicle and experience the storm right from the middle.
They briefly talk about how to defeat a storm, after which many small drones fly into the storm. After that, everything in the trailer seems to get worse. Whether these little drones ultimately made everything worse, or if someone just edited it well, can only be said once the film is in theaters.
