The Elder Scrolls Online has various classes and weapons, but players have long wished for a spear. However, there hasn’t been one as a usable weapon in the game so far. Yet on the island of the Altmer, a player discovered two NPCs wielding spear-like weapons.
What was found? On reddit, a player observed two Altmer training in the city of Davon’s Watch. So far, so normal. But the two Elves had weapons that looked much like spears and had four different attack animations.
This may not seem unusual at first glance, but connoisseurs of ESO know that there are actually no spear weapons available for players in the game. These weapons are something that fans have wished for years. Are the pointed spears finally coming to the game?
Real Spears or Just Staves?
What lies behind the spears? Some players were already hoping that ZeniMax would finally bring the coveted spears into the game. However, other players reassured them. The shown spears are actually just the usual staves, some of which have a prominent tip in Altmer design. Furthermore, this “spear fighting” has been visible in the game for years and is by no means new.
Is there still hope for spears? Nonetheless, the strong reactions (the post on reddit had over 1,600 upvotes and 119 comments on September 18, 2020) show that the ESO community would really like a new weapon category in the game. And spears are at the top of the players’ wish list.
And indeed, at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, the big reveal of the next ESO chapter is coming. If it follows the trend, there will likely be a new class again. Or maybe there will finally be a new weapon category.
What the chief said: Indeed, MeinMMO asked at the reveal of the first great ESO chapter Morrowind about new weapons in the game, directly to the chief developer Matt Firor. He ruled this out for the near future, but stated that spears would be a sensible choice if a new weapon category were to be introduced.
However, since this would entail a lot of balancing – especially in PvP – implementing a completely new weapon category that every one of the now 6 classes could use would be a huge endeavor. Nonetheless, the ESO chief at that time did not rule out the possibility that one day there could still be a new weapon category in the game. More than three years have passed since that statement. So, perhaps in 2021, we will finally get new weapons in the game.
What might still come: Besides spears, players also desire a new class in the 2021 chapter. Major favorites are especially bards and monks. However, both classes have missed the respective chapters that would have suited them. Monks would have been optimal within the spiritual Khajiit in Elsweyr, but instead, necromancers were introduced.
The bards, on the other hand, would have fit perfectly with Skyrim and the city of Solitude. After all, it is where the famous Bard College resides, where you can even hold extensive treasure hunts.
