The vaults in Fallout 4 are surrounded by many curious stories. This also applies to the circumstances of Vault 114. It was meant to serve as a shelter for the most important people in society. It is all the more curious that Vault-Tec chose someone as overseer who, despite warnings, ate a pack of Abraxo cleaning products: “Soup Can Harry”.
Who is “Soup Can Harry”? Soup Can Harry is the nickname of the overseer of Vault 114. His true name is not known, as he refused to reveal it. As the 87th person interviewed for this position, he rebelled against pretty much everything that stood in his way.
In a first job interview, he had several complaints:
- The use of taxpayers’ money (which he himself did not pay)
- The government’s planned reduction of individuality through ranks and numbers.
He also insisted on sleeping on the street and eating Abraxo cleaning products because it was forbidden. He didn’t want to be told by a package what he could and couldn’t do. So he was in absolutely the best conditions to supervise a vault full of wealthy people.

The perfect candidate for Vault 114
What kind of place is Vault 114? Vault-Tec wanted to start a social experiment with Vault 114. Only the most important and richest people in Boston’s society were supposed to be housed here. They were promised that they could continue their lifestyle and surround themselves exclusively with people of their standard.
However, they were not told that they would find themselves in one-room apartments. Meals were served in common areas, and the showers had to be shared among each other. The furnishings were far from luxurious.
Why was Soup Can Harry chosen? To perfect their social experiment, it was important for Vault-Tec to make someone the overseer who had no government experience. Additionally, the person should be anti-authoritarian and possess absolutely no leadership qualities. His “natural charisma” and “unique personality” were noted in the files as crucial factors for his appointment.
The staff of Vault 114 was instructed to follow his orders even if it would be physically uncomfortable for them. This gave Harry a free pass for absolute chaos.
What happened to the vault? Players discover Vault 114 in Fallout 4 only in the quest “Be My Valentine”. There they quickly realize that the experiment never truly started and that the construction was interrupted by falling atomic bombs.

Instead, the ruins became a hideout for Skinny Malone and his gang, who use the unfinished vault as a base for their criminal activities.
