The online shooter Destiny 2 is starting a collaboration with Ghostbusters on March 19. The general reaction is: This doesn’t fit at all and is complete nonsense that is only coming to Destiny 2 because Sony is forcefully merging two things that have nothing in common except that both belong to Sony.
This is the announcement. The Twitter account of Destiny 2 announced yesterday, on March 11, a collaboration between Destiny 2 and Ghostbusters for March 19. There will be 3 cosmetics from the new movie “Ghostbusters Frozen Empire” available in the shop:
- a “Slimer” skin for the ghost – “Silmer Guardian Ghost”
- a Sparrow inspired by “Garraka”, the villain in the new movie “Frozen Empire”
- a ship styled like the Ghostbusters vehicle Ecto-1
There are no armors available. Those are usually the most popular cosmetics
, such as in the Witcher collaboration in November 2023. The only criticism back then was: They are too expensive.
Why is this happening? It’s relatively logical. Sony bought Bungie and thus Destiny 2 for 3.2 billion euros and somehow the billions must come back, especially after they recently expressed dissatisfaction with Bungie.
And Sony Pictures also owns “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” (theatrical release on March 21). Whether these two franchises fit together seems to be completely irrelevant here.
Players seem dissatisfied: Please don’t turn into Fortnite
What are the reactions?
On Twitter, the reactions are mixed. Some seem to be genuinely excited, but others are critical:
- “I don’t know a single person who asked for this.”
- “Please don’t turn into Fortnite. For everything that is sacred: Please don’t do it!”
- “I hope all the extra work you put into microtransactions allows you to improve the game as well.”
On reddit, however, the reactions are even worse:
- The top comment is: “Who asked for this?”
- Others say:
This is just Sony’s attempt to heavily market their Ghostbusters movie.
- A third adds:
If Sony wants to sell their stuff in Destiny, then please let it be Spider-Man. Every Hunter would love to afford an outfit for that.
Actually, Sony had completely different plans when they bought Bungie in 2022. At that time, they certainly didn’t say: We want to sell Ghostbusters merchandise: Sony explains why they bought Bungie – Wonderful, aggressive plans
