In the first revisions, Spider-Man could remain and resembled the real character even more, since Marvel had granted the rights. However, Batman disappeared and turned into a monster. The Rambo design was also changed.
Only with a later revision was Monster-G changed from a Godzilla-like monster to a skeleton creature.
In 2009, another version of the game was released in online stores, which turned Spider-Man pink because the rights had expired.
If you play The Revenge of Shinobi on current collections nowadays, you won’t find Godzilla, Batman, and Spider-Man; you would need the original Japanese version for that. Sega has other major brands besides Sonic. One of the largest is Yakuza, which will receive a new game in February: New large game for PS5 and Steam has a beloved feature that fans of Assassin’s Creed miss

Games based on well-known licenses have existed since video games began. Some even illegally use characters that do not belong to them, including the legendary developer studio Sega. In one of their classics, characters like Batman, Godzilla, and Spider-Man appeared.
Which game is it? In 1989, the action game The Revenge of Shinobi was released for the Sega Genesis. The game is a classic action-platformer, known mainly for its tough difficulty level.
Interestingly, the game had countless versions over time, which had to change a lot about the game. This was mainly because the original used many characters for which Sega did not even have the rights.
Nowadays, the Yakuza series belongs to Sega’s major titles:
A large, unofficial crossover
Which characters were they? As vidaextra.com reports, the protagonist encounters several enemies and bosses throughout the game who are out to get him. Those familiar with pop culture could discover several characters while playing who bore striking similarities to famous characters:
- One character looked like Rambo and was called
Rocky
- Jackie Chan
- A character that resembled the Terminator
- Spider-Man
- Batman
- A monster named Monster-G that looked like Godzilla
Although these were not the exact characters in the game’s story, the similarities were hardly coincidental. The main character also resembled the character Hattori Hanzō from the Japanese series Kage no Gundan. An example of the similarities can be seen here:
The sketches of the enemies were copied too closely
How could this happen? In an interview with Retrogamer.net (via web.archive.org) from 2014, the director of the game, Noriyoshi Oba, spoke about the topic and gave an absurd answer related to his drawing skills:
I made some rough sketches of characters from memory and from photos because I can’t draw well […] They were meant to serve as rough examples. Unfortunately, the sprite designer reproduces my drawings a bit too faithfully, and you know the end result. Personally, I think if the designer had tried to show more of his personality in these characters, they would have looked very different from the originals.

What happened in later versions of the game? The characters couldn’t simply be swapped with patches due to the time period; revisions had to be produced.
In 2009, another version of the game was released in online stores, which turned Spider-Man pink because the rights had expired.
