Last year, Chained Echoes was released and with its mix of old JRPG virtues with a modern twist, it made many nostalgic hearts beat faster. Sea of Stars aims to strike a similar chord. Subscribers of Game Pass and PS Plus Extra can play the game next week at no additional cost.
What is Sea of Stars? Sea of Stars is a classic, turn-based role-playing game. The game is reminiscent of classics from the SNES era like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6 in its style and gameplay. Technically, however, the game has evolved into the modern age and raises pixel graphics to a new level.
The game features several playable characters and makes the turn-based combat system more active. If you press the buttons at the right moment, you can increase the damage of your attacks or reduce the damage taken. This is reminiscent of elements from, for example, Paper Mario or Mario and Luigi.

Old virtues with a modern twist
What else does Sea of Stars offer? To adapt to modern standards, the game aims to include many features.
- No random encounters
- No separate battle screens
- No grinding
- Still a story fitting to the old games
- Many mini-games and side activities
- Beautiful pixel art
Technically, the dynamic lighting is also impressive. The light is rendered dynamically. Whether day or night and depending on the weather, the light falls differently on the characters and the environment. This causes shadows and visuals to adjust dynamically in real-time, creating a special look in combination with the beautiful pixel art.
The similarly inspired Chained Echoes even won at the Game Awards this year:
When is Sea of Stars released? The game releases next week on August 29, 2023, on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series, Steam, and Switch. Subscribers of Game Pass and PS Plus Extra can even download and start the game without additional costs on that day.
Even the creator of Final Fantasy is returning to his roots:
