The upcoming year 2021 was first introduced at the recent investor conference by EA. Among other things, the publisher plans to release the latest installment of the popular Battlefield series there. According to the EA CEO, the newest Battlefield is set to be bigger and more beautiful than ever before, thanks to the next-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Where was the new game announced? Recently, an investor conference took place at EA. There, the company’s plans for the year 2021 were communicated to the investors, and they surely weren’t disappointed. EA has announced 6 new launches for the fiscal year 2022 – which spans from October 2021 to October 2022. Among others, the new Battlefield and a new Need for Speed are expected. Additionally, live service titles like Apex Legends or The Sims 4 will continue to receive updates.
When will the new Battlefield be released? There have already been some more concrete statements from EA. According to them, the new Battlefield is expected to hit the market in just over a year, specifically at Christmas 2021.
Since Battlefield 5 was released in 2018, this would be the longest time you have ever had to wait for a new Battlefield. According to EA, this was necessary to compensate for the impacts of the Corona crisis.
The 5th installment of the Battlefield series was, by the way, given its final update 5 months ago.
What is the name of the game? Following the previous numbering of the series, “Battlefield 6” would be the logical choice. EA has not yet made any specific statements about the title of the new Battlefield game.
Features and Leaks about the Release of Battlefield 6
What are the features? Unfortunately, there are no concrete details here either. However, EA CEO Andrew Wilson has raved about the scale and the new technical possibilities thanks to the new console generation:
Our next Battlefield game will feature unprecedented dimensions. The technological advancements of the new consoles [PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S] allow the team to realize a next-generation vision for the franchise. We are currently conducting internal playtests, and the team has received very positive feedback about the game as we have started to engage our community.
Andrew Wilson, EA CEO
What other information is available about the game? The well-known leaker Tom Henderson has meanwhile leaked information about the game some time ago. Of course, these are unverified, but could potentially stem from the aforementioned internal tests:
- The new Battlefield is supposed to offer maps for up to 128 players, possibly in a Battle Royale format
- Regular maps, however, are expected to house “only” 64 players
- The setting of BF6 is likely not to be World War II, but will probably be based on the popular Battlefield 3, meaning it will take place in the present or near future
This modern setting puts the new Battlefield 2021 in direct competition with the new Call of Duty, which is also expected to have such a theme and is said to be another installment of the Modern Warfare series.
When will we know more? According to EA, more concrete information about the new Battlefield will be released in spring 2021. By then, it should also be clear what the game will be called. Curiously, there was no mention of further Star Wars games, the new Dragon Age, or the anticipated relaunch of the troubled Anthem in the call to investors.
