The new Battlefield is expected to be released around Christmas 2021. However, not much is known about the game yet. Industry insider Tom Henderson has compiled current rumors. According to these, the new Battlefield installment is said to be inspired by one of the best titles in the series: Battlefield 3.
What does Henderson say? In his video, the industry insider discusses rumors regarding the new Battlefield installment, some of which originate from him. It primarily revolves around 5 points:
- Battlefield 6 may not necessarily be the title. The game is supposed to represent a soft reboot, similar to what happened with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It is also possible that the new game will simply be called Battlefield.
- The setting is supposed to be modern, similar to Battlefield 3. In general, it will be strongly oriented toward this title.
- In certain game modes, up to 128 players will be able to battle simultaneously.
- Next-gen versions are being planned, along with versions for PS4 and Xbox One. However, these may be limited to 64-player matches.
- A Battle Royale was supposed to be in development. Whether this is still the case, Henderson does not know.
You can listen to the complete statements of the industry insider on YouTube. Always keep in mind that this is not confirmed information.
How are fans of the series reacting to the rumors? The reactions to the video are very mixed:
- On one hand, there are many players who consider Battlefield 3 to be one of the best entries in the series. They are excited about the new game and hope it will be just as good.
- On the other hand, there are fans of the series who would prefer something completely new or were not happy with Battlefield 3. For them, the statements sounded rather disappointing.
We will reveal what made Battlefield so good and where fans of the series have concerns about the new installment.
Multiplayer and good gameplay make Battlefield 3 so strong
What Battlefield 3 did right: When looking at lists of the best Battlefield games, Battlefield 3 is usually found in the top 3. In a community voting by our colleagues at GameStar, it even took first place.
The game stands out mainly for its multiplayer content and good gameplay. It received praise for:
- The smooth movement dynamics and good graphics
- The demanding gunplay
- The various maps
- The sheer number of players on consoles, which had not been seen before
On Reddit, user SPCTomB also highlighted the vehicles as a personal highlight of the game:
The vehicle gameplay was as close to perfection as one can get in a Battlefield game. It didn’t have the idiocy of the BF4 ammo mechanics.
The higher destruction threshold and the fact that without teamwork, vehicles could only be repaired slowly and ineffectively were also positive. […]
And unlike the latest games, the vehicles seemed to have real physics. Tanks and ground vehicles moved a bit further when you released the gas, instead of stopping immediately like in BF1/BFV.
How was Battlefield 3 rated? Battlefield 3 received a rating of 89 on Metacritic from 61 testers. Several of the websites gave the PC version the full score of 100.
Here, too, there was praise for the graphics, the console implementation, and the number of players. Criticism was primarily directed at the single-player campaign, which some even referred to as “unnecessary ballast.”
Only Battlefield 2 received a better rating of 91 from the entire game series.
The new Battlefield could be like Battlefield 4
What are the critics of Battlefield 3 fearing? Critical voices regarding Henderson’s video fear that the new Battlefield could suffer a similar fate as Battlefield 4.
This was a kind of sequel to BF3, but implemented somewhat worse. Criticism was directed at the inferior and imprecise gunplay, the less fluid movement dynamics, and the unchanged graphics. Additionally, some modes were said to have reminded too much of Call of Duty.
What other criticism is there? The planned version for PS4 and Xbox One is also criticized.
Already Cyberpunk 2077 had issues with the old console generation and many are now fearing that the new Battlefield installment could suffer too.
As the user Pain_Cold writes:
They should ignore the old generation. If they would invest all their energy and time into making the absolute best game, then it simply wouldn’t be feasible on the PS4 and Xbox One. It would give people a reason to buy a PS5.
The market size is still decent with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. But they will probably only offer a free upgrade.
A similar fate had already befallen Battlefield 4, which was released between PS3 and PS4 and initially struggled with technical issues (via GameStar).
Release at the end of 2021 and “innovative experiences”
What has been confirmed so far about Battlefield 6? In October, EA officials confirmed that the release of the new Battlefield is planned for “Holidays 2021”.
It was also stated that Battlefield would deliver innovative experiences and that the shooter should take the series to a new level.
However, when exactly new details about “Battlefield 6” will come is uncertain.
