Currently, Battlefield 5 is one of the most popular games on Steam. In recent weeks, the player count has skyrocketed. How did this happen and is it worth jumping in now?
This is how Battlefield 5 looks on Steam right now: Although Battlefield 5 was released back in November 2018, the game has not been available on Steam for long. The Steam release came only in June 2020, when the officially last chapter of the shooter was released.
Due to the late period and the waning interest in the game, player numbers on Steam had not looked particularly rosy until now. That changed dramatically since August 2021.
While there had been a steady upward trend before, the game was far from being one of the most popular games on Steam. Now, Battlefield even made it into the top 10.
Here you can find a trailer for the last DLC of Battlefield 5:
Battlefield 5 is more popular on Steam than ever before – ranked 8th
These are the numbers: With over 76,000 peak players, Battlefield 5 reached its highest player count on Steam on August 29, 2021 (steamdb.info).
The rise actually began in June 2021. It really took off in early August, and since then, more than 13,000 players have been active regularly. Currently (as of September 2, 5:35 PM), around 60,000 players are online.
Thus, the game ranks ahead of other popular shooters like Rainbow: Six Siege or Warframe. Battlefield 5 is currently in 8th place on the charts.

Where does the sudden surge come from? The surge in June is likely related to the announcement of Battlefield 2042.
The trailer was among the most popular of the entire E3 2021, garnering more than twice as many likes as the Battlefield 5 trailer at its release and the new information likely gave many Battlefield players a motivational boost to check in again.
After all, this helps to pass the waiting time until the new Battlefield 2042. But even players who did not buy Battlefield 5 back then may have taken notice.
- As prices are no longer that high, some may have decided to take a look at the game. The current sale with a 90% discount is certainly helpful.
- Battlefield 5 was also available for “free” via Prime Gaming, but it was through Origin codes. Thus, these numbers do not affect the Steam statistics.
Numerous players are currently eagerly awaiting the announced open beta for Battlefield 2042. This is supposed to be released in September, but there is still no clarity regarding the release date.
This may have encouraged some players to quell their impatience with Battlefield 5.
Is Battlefield 5 worth it in 2021?
Battlefield 5 has been controversial since its original release. On Steam, the game is predominantly positively reviewed. 71% of reviews from the last 30 days are positive.
- As is typical for Battlefield, you take on the role of soldiers and fight on large maps in battles against an enemy team. You are equipped with numerous weapons, gadgets, vehicles, and aircraft.
- Battlefield also thrives on its destruction engine, so you can break down numerous objects and buildings and use that to your tactical advantage.
- The setting is during World War II, so you have access to equipment from that era.
- Since further DLCs have been added after the release, you can expect a substantial package of maps and additional content.
The Definitive Edition with all content currently costs only 5.99 euros on Steam (via steampowered.com), so it is not too hard on your wallet.
Whether it’s worth taking a look at the game is something you’ll have to decide for yourself. However, if you are looking for a time killer until the release of Battlefield 2042 and want to encounter as many players as possible, you’re not making a bad choice with Battlefield 5 right now.
