This article will be continuously updated to keep you informed.
All information about Battlefield 2042 – Beta, Release, System Requirements
Battlefield 2042 officially released on November 19, 2021. Originally, the shooter was supposed to be released on October 22, 2021, but was postponed.
The shooter is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5, as well as on last-gen consoles Xbox One and PS4. However, it is expected that the upcoming Battlefield will take full advantage of the next-gen consoles.
The setting is established in the year 2042. Therefore, alongside robotic dogs, there will also be some other futuristic gadgets. Overall, the scenario resembles a modernized version of Battlefield 4.
In total, up to 128 players can be on a map. This means matches can consist of 64vs64 players. On the older consoles Xbox One and PS4, this is not possible. Due to technical reasons, there can only be a maximum of 64 players on a map.
Launch of Battlefield 2042 was catastrophic
This went wrong with Battlefield 2042: Since the release, Battlefield 2042 has not been able to escape negative headlines. The game had significant issues even during beta and early access, and these only worsened with the full release.
- bugs and glitches caused frustration and annoyance, especially before the first updates.
- Even after several patches, the situation has not improved much for many players.
- The first reviews were correspondingly devastatingly poor, at times, Battlefield 2042 was in the top 10 worst games on Steam.
- Player numbers have dropped so low that even Battlefield V and Battlefield 1 have more active players, despite being several years old.
- Ratings on Metacritic also did not fare well.
Consequently, fans expressed their frustration on social media, particularly on the subreddit for Battlefield 2042, where discontent was rampant.
At one point, the backlash following a developer post was so intense that there was discussion of shutting down the subreddit. Developers were personally attacked, and there were reportedly even death threats.
The technical state of the game even led to Steam refunding players’ money, even though the usual requirements were not met.
At the moment, neither the community nor the game itself is at peace. Recently, the Rush mode caused irritation. It was temporarily included in the game after launch and immediately became the most popular game mode.
As a result, numerous players demanded that it be permanently included in the game. Although its duration was extended, Rush was then removed again in early January. Just a week later, on January 13, DICE finally caved to the pressure and player frustration: Rush is now back in the game.
Insider Tom Henderson has revealed in a comprehensive report what allegedly led to the state of Battlefield 2042.
Despite everything, Battlefield 2042 is among the best-selling games of 2021 on PS5:

Battlefield 2042 Seasons, Battle Pass, and Roadmap after Release
What’s next after release: Battlefield 2042 will be continuously expanded with content after release. There will be a season pass and several battle passes.
After release, there are supposed to be four seasons in the first year, each with thematic differences. Every season brings new maps, specialists, and weapons. These contents will be free for all players.
According to industry insider Tom Henderson, each season will include the following:
- One new specialist per season
- 2 new MP maps
- 2 new portal maps
- 1 update for the yet-to-be-introduced “Hazard Zone” mode
- 6-8 new weapons
- 2-3 new vehicles and aircraft
This is how the battle passes work:
- In total, there will be four different battle passes in the first year.
- Each battle pass runs for a period of 3 months.
- There’s a free and a paid level path.
- Battle passes are not supposed to contain essential content like maps or specialists.
- They are purely for cosmetic gimmicks and similar things.
- Each battle pass is supposed to offer 100 levels.
How much does a battle pass cost? There is no official price yet. In other multiplayer shooters, a battle pass usually costs around 10 Euros. It is likely that Battlefield 2042 will be in a similar range.
No exact information is available about the content. However, the trailer has already revealed some interesting details. These include, for example, the map where you will likely play.
When does the first season start? It was originally supposed to start in January 2022. However, the first season is delayed according to the well-known leaker temporyal, as the game has significant issues. Thus, it may not begin until March.

- The last-gen consoles will be separated from PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, as these versions will have significant differences in technology.
- While the new consoles support 128 players, only 64 players can compete on the old ones.
- The maps will also be considerably smaller on the older consoles.
Features such as weapons, vehicles, the new specialists, and gadgets should, however, be the same regardless of console generation.Find all the differences between the Battlefield versions here.
The Setting of Battlefield 2042
Is there a campaign in Battlefield 2042? No. The shooter skips a story campaign, but there is still a framework for multiplayer.
Developer DICE has published a timeline explaining what happens in the world of the shooter before players enter:
- The world is on the brink due to the “greatest crisis in human history,” climate change. Rising sea levels and hurricanes are causing destruction worldwide.
- In January 2034, a “global food and fuel shortage” breaks out.
- Due to the resource shortage, there is a “second great depression,” a huge global economic crisis.
- In August 2035, even the European Union dissolves after the bankruptcy of Germany.
Ultimately, even 1.2 billion people are stateless (No-Pats). The USA and Russia, as the remaining superpowers, then recruit “elite commandos” from the No-Pats and send them into battles for the remaining resources. Battlefield 2042 predicts: Germany will go bankrupt, the EU will dissolve – It’s not political
There is also a short film that connects the story from Battlefield 4 to Battlefield 2042:
Battlefield 2042 Specialists – The Class System of the Shooter
How does the class system work in Battlefield 2042? Basically, there is still the well-known class division:
- Assault soldier
- Support
- Engineer
- Recon
This is different from Battlefield 5: There will be fewer restrictions on your weapon selection. Unlike Battlefield 5, as a Recon, you can also use weapons with shorter ranges, and an Assault soldier has access to long-range calibers that were previously only allowed for Recon. This makes the classes more variable.
The class is determined by your specialist, who is supposed to support your playstyle with their abilities. Each specialist has an active and a passive ability.
Recently, there was a new gameplay trailer showcasing the specialists and their gadgets:
What is known so far about the individual specialists has been summarized for you: All known class specialists in Battlefield 2042 and what they can do
The Game Modes of Battlefield 2042 – All-Out-Warfare, Portal, and Hazard
What modes will there be? Currently, we know of two classic game modes that will be included in All-Out-Warfare.
These are the modes of All-Out-Warfare:
- Conquest
- One of the oldest modes in the Battlefield series, where you have to capture and hold certain points on the map.
- Breakthrough
- In this mode, there is an attacking and a defending team fighting over specific points on the map.
With Hazard Zone, there is another mode that is supposed to offer a very different gaming experience.
Hazard Zone is not a battle royale, but it strongly resembles Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown. Team play and precise coordination of equipment are said to play a major role in success.
Portal, on the other hand, is a mode that is expected to work based on community input, giving players tools to create their own content. It also includes content from Battlefield classics from the past 20 years.
Battlefield Portal
What is Battlefield Portal? This is a community-driven mode where players can access content and maps from three Battlefield classics and create their own game modes. These include:
- Battlefield 3
- Battlefield: Bad Company 2
- Battlefield 1942
From all games, vehicles, weapons, tools, and even factions can be used and absurdly combined. For example, you can have soldiers from World War II face off against the US troops from Battlefield 3.
The mode is supposed to offer you numerous possibilities that were previously only available to developers. Portal is the most popular mode of Battlefield 2042 before release – Here’s how it works
You can then run everything on your own servers. However, rental servers are currently not part of the plan – the started portal servers will disappear if there has been no player on the server for several hours.
All important information can be found in our special about Portal. Here, you can also watch the trailer for it:
What do we currently know about Hazard? EA has not officially introduced the third major mode yet. However, thanks to a large alpha leak and a data miner, there is already some preliminary information on Hazard. But keep in mind that this has not been officially confirmed.
Hazard Zone in Battlefield 2042
What you need to know about Hazard Zone: The mode mixes PvP and PvE elements,as previously revealed in a major leak. Hazard Zone thus somewhat resembles the Dark Zone from The Division.
There are not only human opponents, but also NPC enemies. These are the so-called crew troops that besiege important data carriers or prevent you from extracting the data. Your main objective is not to kill opponents.
Instead, you need to extract these data carriers and survive.
How many players are possible per match? That depends on your platform. The old consoles have to settle for fewer players:
- 24 on Xbox One and PS4
- 32 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5
We have summarized the most important information for you in our special, and here you can also watch the trailer for Hazard Zone:
All Maps of Battlefield 2042
What maps are there in Battlefield 2042? A total of 7 brand-new maps will be included in All-Out-Warfare and Hazard at launch:
- Orbital
- Hourglass
- Kaleidoscope
- Manifest
- Discarded
- Breakaway
- Renewal
Each of the maps features different events, which can occur in a match and significantly alter the matches. In the first trailer, you could already admire a tornado on the Hourglass map; we presented you with further events: This is how the battlefields change
However, that’s not all. With the new portal mode, 6 of the most popular maps from 19 years of Battlefield are also returning.
6 additional maps in the Portal mode
These maps are only available in this particular game mode, combined with the 7 new from the All-Out-Warfare section. Thus, 13 maps can be played in the Portal mode.
Here’s an overview of the classic maps:
Battlefield 1942
- El Alamein
- Battle Of The Bulge
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
- Arica Harbor
- Valparaiso
Battlefield 3
- Caspian Border
- Noshahr Canals
Larger maps, more players, more destruction, “Levolution”
What to expect in Battlefield 2042: In addition to the classic Battlefield gameplay, the maps will be significantly larger than anything seen before in the series. Consequently, with up to 128 players on Xbox Series X|S and PS5, significantly more players will be on the field at the same time.
Destruction, physics, dynamic events – all of this is expected to be notably better and more realistic in Battlefield 2042 than previously known. In the first gameplay, for example, a gigantic tornado can be seen, which excited fans. In an interview, developer DICE commented on destruction (via Gamesradar.com):
- They speak of “destructible environments” and “ground deformation”.
- Grenades and other explosives should be able to significantly alter the map more than in previous installments of the series.
- A map is supposed to look completely different at the end of a round than at the start.
If you want to see how big the difference is, you can watch a comparison between the new maps of Battlefield 2042 and the old maps from previous installments.
Anti-Cheat Measures in Battlefield 2042
Developer DICE and publisher EA have extensively addressed the issue of cheaters, general rules, and dealing with toxic behavior in their official dev blog about Battlefield 2042.
How Battlefield 2042 aims for fair play: To create a good atmosphere, EA has established some principles. It appeals to players to work together and not negatively influence other players.
To ensure this, players are encouraged to report any violations. Here is the list of things you can report directly:
- Abusive text chat
- Abusive voice chat
- Cheating/exploiting exploits
- Gameplay sabotage
- Offensive player name
- Harassment
How they want to tackle cheaters: Battlefield 2042 relies on Epic Games’ Easy Anti-Cheat software. This is already used for other EA games like Apex Legends or Star Wars: Squadrons.
Anyone caught cheating faces a permanent ban, issued directly and without warning. However, the release has shown that Battlefield 2042 also has problems with cheaters.
Or rather had, because recent information from insider Tom Henderson was alarming: Battlefield 2042 is apparently performing so poorly that even cheat providers are quitting.
