Battlefield 2042 – Maps, Modes, Player Count, and Old Consoles
When will Battlefield 2042 be released? The official release is on October 22. Buyers of the Ultimate Edition can start a week earlier – on October 15. If you are subscribed to the “EA Play” service, you will have access to a 10-hour trial starting from October 15.
Will there be an open beta? The developers announced a test phase for all interested parties, but there is currently no date for an open beta.
What are the system requirements? So far, there have been no specific details regarding the system requirements for Battlefield 2042 on PC.
How many players can join a match? Battlefield 2042 supports up to 128 players in a match (64vs.64) for the first time. The maps are expected to be correspondingly large and to exceed all previous Battlefield standards.
However, this does not apply to the older consoles PS4 and Xbox One. Due to their weaker performance, there will be smaller maps and a maximum of 64 players will compete for victory (32vs.32).
Are the versions for older consoles any different? Generally speaking, the versions are not supposed to differ. The large maps will be limited to smaller sectors and tailored to matches with 64 players. This has been confirmed by Game Director Daniel Berlin in an interview with colleagues from GameStar (via GameStar).
What is there to know about the maps? There should be a total of 7 maps available at launch, which will reach unprecedented dimensions. The maps are:
- Kaleidoscope – Sogdo, South Korea
- Manifest – Brani Island, Singapore
- Orbital – Kourou, French Guiana
- Discarded – Alang, India
- Renewal – Eastern Desert, Egypt
- Hourglass – Doha, Qatar
- Breakaway – Queen Maud Land, Antarctica
In the trailer, you can already get a glimpse of most of the locations.
What modes have been announced? Overall, Battlefield 2042 will rely on 3 modes, but only two of them will be available at launch:
- Conquest – the classic conquest in BF2042 style
- Breakthrough – One team plays as attackers and tries to capture the defenders’ points
The developers have slightly modified Conquest due to the large maps. You will fight for the various sectors on a map and have to capture the areas gradually. The sectors can then no longer be recaptured.
Is the third mode a battle royale? It cannot be said for sure at the moment; nothing is known about the third mode so far. Leaks and rumors ahead of the reveal suggest, however, that Battlefield 2042 is working on a battle royale. This has not been officially confirmed.
Battlefield 2042 does not have a story campaign but offers bot matches
What is the story behind BF 2042? The Earth is experiencing a terrible time in 2042. Humanity is plagued by natural disasters, economic downturns, water scarcity, and an unprecedented refugee crisis. Many nations have given up and no longer exist.
The stateless veterans of the former nations are the soldiers of the players – you take on the role of these “Non-Patriated” (No-Pats). You fight either on the side of the USA or Russia, the last two superpowers engaged in a war over the remaining resources.
Does Battlefield 2042 have an extensive single-player campaign? The latest Battlefield completely forgoes a campaign and focuses on the multiplayer experience.
Can I still play BF2042 solo? The shooter offers extensive possibilities for playing against bots. You can engage in the large modes completely alone as a PvE experience.
Information on the class system and gameplay mechanics
What does the class system in Battlefield 2042 look like? The familiar classes will return:
- Assault Soldier
- Engineer
- Support
- Recon
However, the standard equipment and weapons are no longer restricted to specific classes. The class is rather determined by your “specialist”.
The specialists system is reminiscent of the operator mechanics in Rainbow Six Siege. Each of the specialist soldiers has their own personality and a gadget that provides gameplay advantages. The gadgets then determine the class. The specialist with a grappling hook belongs to the assault soldiers, while the support soldier can carry a pistol with healing ammunition.
At launch, there will be 10 specialists available, and per team, you can select one specialist per class. Over time, more specialists are expected to be added to expand the selection. Some leaked images of several specialists are already circulating:
What special features does the gameplay offer? Battlefield 2042 fully leans into material warfare and provides you with a large selection of vehicles. There are tanks, airplanes, and smaller vehicles. You can summon the vehicles with your specialists and are not reliant on randomly having a tank nearby.
Additionally, each map features a “Levolution.” The maps will change due to external events like tornadoes or sandstorms during matches. This was already present in Battlefield 4 but is said to be more organic and less scripted. The impact on gameplay could be drastic. Tornadoes will throw players and vehicles around like toys, and the fighters on the battlefield must adjust their approach.
Destructible environments are also back. You can inflict extensive damage on the locations, and this likely also applies to a tornado sweeping across the map.
What comes after the release
How does Battlefield 2042 plan to stay exciting after release? There will be live service support, and part of that is a battle pass. The pass offers a paid premium path and a free path that you can level up by spending playtime.
The battle pass will not only bring cosmetic items but also gameplay-relevant content such as weapons, equipment, and new specialists. However, all important content should be unlockable through the free path – the premium version only provides extra cosmetics.
To that end, Battlefield 2042 has planned a season system. In the first year, there will be a total of 4 seasons, and each season will offer a new battle pass. The developers have already confirmed that there will be one new specialist per season. So far, there is no information about the number of new maps.
