For the release of Battlefield 2042, the multiplayer shooter will offer a crossplay feature. However, there will be some limitations. MeinMMO explains how it is supposed to work.
What is crossplay actually? This is a feature that allows you to play with other players regardless of the platform you are on.
For example, if you are playing on PC, you can then also start matches with console players using crossplay. Battlefield 2042 will also feature crossplay – but not for everyone.
For which platforms is Battlefield 2042 available? The shooter is available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5. While crossplay will be possible, it will not be available between all the mentioned platforms. Technical reasons lead to some limitations.
Battlefield 2042 Crossplay – Can PS4 and PS5 play together?
This is how crossplay works: Players are essentially divided into two groups with crossplay, which can play across platforms:
- PC, Xbox Series X | S, and PlayStation 5 form the first group and can play among themselves.
- PC and console players can then decide whether they want to play with the respective other platform.
- The other group consists of Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Why these two groups? Battlefield 2042 is a cross-gen title and is also coming to the old consoles. However, the technical differences between the old console generation and the new one are significant.
Therefore, the PS4 and Xbox One versions, for example, have significantly lower player counts and smaller maps. The new consoles can handle battles with up to 128 players, while Xbox One and PS4 can only support up to 64 players.
Features like weapons, vehicles, the new specialists and gadgets should be the same across platforms. You can find all differences of the Battlefield versions here.
Progress and in-game purchases can be transferred to other platforms
Your progress will apparently be cross-platform as EA claims that Battlefield will also offer cross-progression.
What does that mean? For example, those who have played Battlefield on a PS4 can simply take their unlocked items and other progress to another platform. Apparently, there will also be a new feature that EA calls “Cross-Commerce”.
What is Cross-Commerce? This feature will allow you to take your purchased in-game items from Battlefield 2042 to any platform. Thus, for example, you can take your battle pass from one console to another.
Keep in mind that EA is still working on this feature and even postponed the alpha playtest for this. Therefore, a few things may change before the release.
