Soon, there could be community maps for Battlefield 1. You will then be able to take part in how a new map is built.
Designing future maps for the shooter Battlefield 1 is not solely the task of the developers. You, the community, can also have a significant influence on new maps for the multiplayer modes. The community map “Operation Daybreak” for Battlefield 4 was well received not only by players but also by developers. As a developer recently revealed, this type of map development could also be possible for BF 1 in the future.
Community projects should happen more often
In Battlefield 4, there was already a map project where the developers worked with strong community involvement. On Reddit, a user asked whether community maps can be expected in Battlefield 1 in the future.
In response, Indigowd, producer for Battlefield 1, stated that the team enjoyed collaborating with the community and the result of the Operation Daybreak map in Battlefield 4. In meetings, the team often discusses that they should start such projects more frequently. More information about testing maps will be available soon.
How does a community map work?
Those hearing about a community map for the first time might wonder how much influence a player has on the outcome of such a map. While the developers initiated such a project in Battlefield 4, players had influence over various aspects of the map.
- First, players were consulted whether the setting of the map is in a city or in the countryside
- Additionally, the environment was queried: Jungle? Mountains? Desert?
After the voting was evaluated, the developers implemented the desired aspects and prepared the map for testing. The map was presented and tested on the Community Test Environment (CTE). The developers wanted to know how the map feels and whether it is “alive”.
Once the map was finished and passed the player tests, it was published (after some fine-tuning) in the Community Operations expansion.
Whether the community map in Battlefield 1 will follow the same procedure is currently unknown.
