Battleborn is coming out on May 3rd and recently we had the chance to have fun in the open beta. Therefore, we can name you eight reasons why the hero shooter from the creators of Borderlands truly rocks.
Battleborn is a mix of team shooter, coop spectacle, and MOBA. And since the latest game from the creators of Borderlands will be a classic Buy2Play title, you can’t just jump in and try out the game. But don’t worry, we were active in the open beta and discussed eight reasons why the game is worth it.

1 – Optimal mix of MOBA and shooter
Unlike classic MOBAs like LoL, Dota2, or Heroes of the Storm, you play Battleborn from a first-person perspective like a shooter. But don’t worry, the missing overview is well compensated for by the detailed minimap, and skill shots can easily be done with a bit of practice.
Due to the first-person perspective, we are much closer to the action and experience it up close. This significantly increases immersion and the gaming feel. Battleborn is thus ideally suited for players who are comfortable with shooters and generally interested in MOBA gameplay.
2 – Wacky characters
Anyone who knows Borderlands knows that the developers at Gearbox place a lot of value on quirky and original characters. And Battleborn perfectly continues this tradition. The playable heroes are all original and quite bizarre.
Looking for examples? No problem, there is among others a cute little penguin in a mech suit, a four-armed anarcho-witch, a huge muscle mountain with a tiny head, a punk girl who sends a demon to attack her enemies, a ninja mushroom, and a flying luchador! Therefore, if you want to play more than just the usual hero clichés, Battleborn is the right choice.
3 – Delightfully dark humor
Just like the Borderlands games, Battleborn is filled with wickedly dark humor. This starts with the individual characters and their backstories and is deepened in the game through frequent comments from the characters – for example, when a kill is made or when we get taken out ourselves.
However, the humor comes across best in the coop mode. For example, when we fight against a multi-legged guard robot that thinks it is “Arachnis, the Spider King” and constantly talks about what super spider powers it has. In another mission, we accompany another hefty battle robot who, despite numerous hints like “Operation Death March,” still doesn’t realize that he has to sacrifice himself with an atomic bomb on his back for the good of the team.
4 – Fun coop mode
Are battles against other players not your thing? Did you find the coop mode in Borderlands super? No problem, because besides the MOBA mode, you can also play Battleborn cooperatively with other players. In its missions, we blast through hordes of enemies and follow the storyline through excitingly staged levels.
These missions always have a clever story as a backdrop and are full of cool moments. Moreover, teamwork is essential to successfully navigate through the missions.
5 – Easy to get into
Battleborn is easy to learn because each hero has only one weapon, which clearly defines their gameplay style. Additionally, each character has two regular skills, a passive ability, and an ultimate skill, which will only be unlocked later in the game.
In addition, there is a very dynamic leveling system that offers us one of two upgrades for our skills with each level-up. The system is easy to overview and even easier to learn. This way, we can quickly get into the game and have more time to practice optimal tactics.
6 – Practical shop system
In addition to our fixed skills and weapons, we can carry three items before a match, which give us valuable bonuses. The items themselves come from loot crates that we earn in the game. However, the items are not easy to use.
For example, if we want to shoot faster or desire higher speed, we must activate the corresponding items first by collecting resources in the game world. The optional items give Battleborn more depth, and even two identical heroes are not the same.
7 – Meaningful building mechanics
The resources in the game world are not only used to activate items. At predefined points, we can build useful structures. For example, turrets, healing stations, or speed boosters. The latter temporarily increases our speed and that of our minions, allowing them to reach their target sooner.
Additionally, we earn experience points by building structures, allowing us to help our team and level up even if we are not the best shooter on the battlefield. More than one match in Battleborn has already been decided by a strategically well-placed turret or a helpful healing station.
8 – Thoughtful hero unlock system
The 25 heroes in Battleborn are not all available right from the start. Instead, you have to unlock most of them first. To do this, we need to display a corresponding gameplay style, complete specific PvE missions, or simply play long enough until our player account reaches a certain level.
Since we do not have all the heroes at once, we are – especially as beginners – not immediately overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices and can gradually unlock our dream hero. And because of this method, we also get to play pretty much every character and get to know them naturally, understanding their strengths and weaknesses on the battlefield. Ideal when we have to face them in battle.
