Many have unintentionally acquired Baldur’s Gate 3 – without knowing it. The developer doesn’t mind much and even gifts the game to them.
When gaming companies accidentally give something away, the mistake is usually rectified quite quickly. A free DLC, an incorrect unlock – a quick patch fixes such quirks. But Larian is different and says about Baldur’s Gate 3: It’s fine, you can keep it.
What was the problem? Those wanting to buy the physical version of the Collector’s Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 had to wait quite a long time. In many cases, it has just been delivered and is reaching people now.
However, buyers had already received a key in advance to redeem, with which they could unlock the Collector’s Edition DLC – which includes some cosmetic goodies.
However, the code on Xbox actually unlocked the entire game.
Those who noticed this were able to use their DLC code to obtain Baldur’s Gate 3 or simply pass this code on to a friend or acquaintance.
What has Larian done now? In a message to the community, Larian has explained that they have now acknowledged the mistake. However, the people who wrongfully possess the game will not have it taken away. They are allowed to keep the full version, even if the code was not supposed to unlock it.
Additionally, those affected will receive another DLC code to finally unlock it.
This is how the community reacts: They celebrate Larian’s approach. They believe others should take a leaf out of this book. Because other companies, according to some fans, would have turned this into a huge PR disaster and either deactivated the versions or taken additional money from fans in other ways. Larian’s good handling of the community simply shows that they know how good their game actually is.
The fact that Larian does exactly that and instead says “It’s fine” makes them a hero in the eyes of many.
