Grym is one of the first bosses you can encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3 and he directly has a real boss mechanic like from an MMO. The boss can be quite tough, but can be easily dealt with using various techniques – if you know them.
What kind of boss is this?
- Grym is a huge, living armor, you can find him in the Grym Forge, where you can craft some of the strongest items in Act 1.
- The boss has some pretty nasty mechanics: As a living armor, he is inherently immune to most spells and effects. Additionally, he has strong resistances to most types of damage.
- The plan is to melt his armor with lava – which will also kill you – and then beat him with a forge hammer – which will also kill you… You need good timing and perfect positioning for the fight.
That’s why Grym is considered an “easier” boss: The actual mechanic was probably not understood or utilized by most players on their first attempt. In fact, some even claim: The fight is much easier when played incorrectly.
Grym has led the community to a lot of creativity, as people had to think about how the hell to get past this boss. This resulted in some crazy ideas and builds as well as the meme of the fat owl bears that simply oneshot the boss.
Since the boss appears so early in the game and the tips spread quickly, Grym is considered by veterans, especially, as a freeloot boss that can do nothing. This has become a downfall for new players.
The user Infinite_jess on Reddit complains: “You guys said the boss is easy peasy, what the hell!” The player writes that he specifically brought spells with Gale and his main character to deal with the Mephits.
In the end, that wasn’t enough: Grym simply rolled over him and only Shadowheart was left standing at the top of the stairs with a Hill Giant Strength potion in hand, throwing items at the boss until he died. Ultimately, he had to retreat, revive the group, and start again.

In the comments, Infinite_jess is directly pointed out to the mistake. Grym is easy when you exploit mechanics – that’s exactly what didn’t happen here. The user 13Urdt35 explains:
Tip: You can shoot the lava lever. For all who want to know the exact cheese: You can lower the platform and do everything EXCEPT activate the lava lever. Then quickly travel back. Hold someone up at the top of the stairs, then shoot the lever. Grym spawns but has no way to reach you.
You can use things like Horrific Beam or Recurring Spike to take him out completely risk-free. If you want to be 110% sure, hide when the Mephits spawn until Grym has taken care of them for you.

Exactly this approach seems to have been unknown to many players. One user responds: “Why am I only finding this out now?! […] I spent 5 hours on the fight before I won…”
There are other tips that probably weren’t very well known, such as “Heating metal” working just like lava. But the easiest way is still to give Lae’zel and Karlach a big hammer and just smash Grym to bits.
