In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can play as the Dark Urge. Players discover unique dialogues with their companions and are thrilled. MeinMMO reveals to you what lies behind it.
Baldur’s Gate 3, the celebrated turn-based role-playing adventure that captivates players worldwide, constantly holds surprises – some of which you only experience when you play as the Dark Urge
(engl. Dark Urge
).
Spoiler: The article contains spoilers about the Dark Urge
. Read on at your own risk, we warned you.
What is the Dark Urge in gameplay terms? Dark Urge uniquely combines two things in character selection:
- You can create a character yourself, being free in your choice of class, race, and appearance.
- But you still experience a pre-made storyline, as if you select one of the companions like Gale or Karlach as your starting hero.
So you get the best of both worlds: If you want to freely design a hero, you miss out on a personal story. If you choose one of the companions, you have less freedom in character design.
But what makes Dark Urge
so fascinating? It’s the unexpected twists it allows the player. Playing as a serial killer opens up unique interactions with your companions and new scenarios in the game, which players discover and love the Dark Urge
for even more.

Players love the interactions with the Dark Urge
What have players discovered? One of these scenes can be experienced with Astarion, but it’s quite something. A player reports on Reddit about a unique dialogue that Astarion has during the game with the Dark Urge
.
Here you can see the Reddit post:
If you start a romance as Dark Urge
with Astarion, the pale elf will throw the following words at you, as Reddit user Jadefangg discovered: I would rather be the only dark power in your body, if you don’t mind.
After Astarion’s line, the player humorously concluded: “That’s why I will always play Dark Urge from now on.”
Jadefangg also praises:
I’m currently playing through Dark Urge for the second time, and the first playthrough was Tav… I feel like Dark Urge has so much more to offer – the interactions with the companions and the environment, the dialogue options, and the inevitable murders triggered because you don’t know if the selected option will even lead to a murder? […]

Tav. Additionally, Tav could mean: Tadpoled Adventurer, as all self-created characters are named because everyone has been infected.
The name is reportedly derived from the original development version with the project name Gustav. Gustav is said to be the name of Swen Vincke’s dog, as voiced by Halsin’s voice actor Dave Jones on X.
Players use the term
Tavto refer to the player’s main character. Thus, we all probably carry the nickname of Swen Vincke’s dog.
But not only Astarion is captivated by the allure of the Dark Urge
. Your companion Gale also has amazing interactions with the serial killer.
When the player character confessed that he would be forced to kill Gale because he cared the most about him, Gale humorously responded, “Sweet that you care enough about me to murder me. Do you mind if you don’t?” An eccentric dialogue that makes the gameplay all the more entertaining, as player Perfect_Address_6359 notes. The player is aiming to play a good Dark Urge.
Other players also joined the discussion on Reddit and shared special lines of your companions about the Dark Urge
:
- Dianwei32 writes that Karlach would respond similarly to Gale:
With Karlach it’s similar. You tell her, and her reaction is: That’s so sweet… And fucked up.
- GreatPhail is thrilled by Lae’zel’s lines:
Almost all origin companions: It’s so sweet that you’re trying not to kill me. Lae’zel: Fuck around and find out. Still a sweet scene, but my god, she’s so different from the others lol.
- Consistent-Basis-509 believes:
Urge has some of the best scenes, and I stand by that.
What exactly is the Dark Urge
? The Dark Urge
is one of the origin stories you can play. As Dark Urge
, you take on the role of a person without memories. It is revealed that this character is regularly haunted by an overwhelming urge to murder. As a beginner, you should avoid the Dark Urge unless you are absolute psychos.
The Dark Urge delights in brutality and bloodshed – all of this satisfies the character, even if he does not want it. The Dark Urge
thus struggles with an inner conflict – how much should he give in to these impulses?
Anyone playing the Dark Urge
will also experience some story surprises during their playthrough.
Dark Urge
is undoubtedly a character that not only highlights the dark sides of the game but also brings fun and laughter to the forefront. Who would have thought that evil could be so entertaining?
MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus has played the Dark Urge
and is thrilled:
I now know what the “Dark Urge” is, and it makes the character so much better
