In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can be evil – extremely evil. Some players show no mercy and betray the beloved Shadowheart in the darkest possible way.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players have as much freedom as is rarely found in a game. Countless possibilities create a very personal story. But a lot of freedom also means the option to be particularly cruel – and some of you apparently enjoy betraying the NPC Shadowheart in the most brutal way possible. At least that’s what’s being discussed in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Subreddit.
Spoiler Warning: Here are some sensitive spoilers regarding the story of Shadowheart from Baldur’s Gate 3. Read at your own risk.
Who is Shadowheart? Shadowheart is a cleric who is devoted to the goddess Shar. In Baldur’s Gate 3, she is initially the bearer of a mysterious artifact. As is common for followers of Shar, she has lost a large part of her memories. Her story consists of gradually regaining these memories and either breaking away from Shar or solidifying her faith in her goddess – that is entirely in the players’ hands.
What do players do with Shadowheart? Rogen80 explains how he betrayed Shadowheart. He describes:
There is an option to kill Shadowheart’s parents in the camp after saving them … that doesn’t end well. Shadowheart doesn’t just get angry – she goes completely berserk. She permanently leaves the group, becomes hostile, and attacks you. (…)
She even has special lines before that like: ‘I came here to save her, and you murdered her! I may not have known her like a daughter should, but I will still avenge her!’
Furthermore, when starting the fight with her, she screams: ‘Monsters! They were my parents!’
Other comments in the post also have some cruel ideas about what they have done to Shadowheart. For example, “Shadowheart’s Tav” describes:
I have never done it and will not do it, but I believe the worst thing you can do to Shadowheart is:
Dating her, ensuring she renounces Shar, and promising her to spend the rest of her life with you, so you become the only person she truly trusts – and then hand her over to Viconia. There is even a possibility to go back to her the next day and talk to her after her mind has been wiped. The abyssal betrayal.
Basically, most people are excited about how significant the decisions can be and how diverse the options are. That Larian thought of so many different ways to betray beloved characters shows most how much love went into the game.
