Selling the wrong item can have catastrophic consequences in Baldur’s Gate 3. Because it can even lead to the death of beloved companions if one is not careful.
One of the most challenging tasks in Baldur’s Gate 3 is inventory management. With the huge amounts of loot one can find, you quickly become overloaded and often lose sight of what is actually important and what is just junk.
This also happened to a player who unfortunately sold a “little” item, resulting in him having to permanently bid farewell to a companion.
What item was sold? The item in question here is the Spear of Night. You receive it during Shar’s trials. If you have Shadowheart with you, she even clearly points it out. This spear is necessary to perform the ritual that Shadowheart feels called to.
The user Katyamuffin revealed on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit that this spear has already ruined his game save for the third time. He sold the spear to a demonic trader, who soon after closes his shop.
Why is it so easy to accidentally sell the Spear of Night? Why is it not a quest item? Why doesn’t it have any special framing? It’s not even RARE?
Not only is it easy to accidentally sell it, it’s also easy to sell it at a location where the only trader (one of Yurgir’s Merregons) either dies or disappears after you finish the area, making it impossible to retrieve the spear.
What happens without the item? When the encounter with the Night Song occurs, Shadowheart’s task is actually clear. She must kill the Night Song to become the “Dark Justiciar” and prove her loyalty to Shar. Shadowheart is more than willing to do this – however, she needs the Spear of Night, which you find earlier in the temple. Because only this weapon is capable of actually killing the Night Song.
If you try to approach the Night Song without the Spear of Night, Shadowheart becomes angry. A dialogue starts where she refuses to proceed without this important weapon. Here, there are only two options – either you fight Shadowheart or send her back to camp. Both inevitably end with Shadowheart permanently leaving the group (either dead or utterly disappointed).

This is the second time this has happened to me, and this time it was in Honour mode, so I had to kill Shadowheart because I didn’t have a dialogue option like “Sorry girl, I sold your super important, divine, magical spear while I was giving the trader all my junk because it just looked like an old rusty throwing spear.”

Some have also offered helpful tips for the player, like giving the characters additional bags in their inventory. The player Baldurs-Mouse advises:
“Grab a bag, like the money pouch in Shadowheart’s inventory, and put the spear in there. If you don’t have the habit of selling items from bags, then you can’t accidentally sell it anymore.”
