What the strongest class in Baldur’s Gate 3 is, is being discussed vigorously. Now someone is defending the Druid – and he is receiving a lot of support.
The choice of class in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be debated for hours. While many have pondered what the mathematically best combination is and what thus represents the objectively “strongest class” in terms of damage dealt, some players discuss it a bit differently.
In the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit, it is talked about that one of the strongest classes is actually the one that many disregard: the Druid.
Why is the Druid considered weak? The Druid is one of the less popular classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. Along with the Cleric, it was the rarest class choice at the launch of the game. There are several reasons for this.
On one hand, players are given several Druids as companions in the game – namely Halsin and Jaheira. Knowing this, one would hesitate to include a third Druid in the group and create one themselves.
On the other hand, the Druid appears somewhat “boring” at first glance, as he is seen more as a support or tank. Certainly, those who appreciate high damage numbers and prefer to throw devastating spells around will likely opt for Warlock, Wizard, or Sorcerer instead of creating a “tree-hugger”.
Why is the Druid said to be so powerful? CasualSky reports in his post in the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit why the Druid is not only one of the strongest classes from his perspective, but has also brought him the most joy while playing so far.
The Druid is a great character. They have access to many spells that other spellcasters don’t get, and they are easily one of the most unique classes in the game. At level 6, they can transform into an Owlbear and therefore have almost 100 additional hit points, AoE jumps with knockdown, their attacks count as magical, they gain multiple attacks, and can concentrate on spells while transformed. By the end of the game, they have three charges that they can use for hundreds of temporary hit points while casting spells in between. And their armor is solid, as they start with medium armor.
The transformations are not the only thing that makes the Druid so great. Because – aside from the Owlbear form or channeling spells – the Druid also has access to a variety of summoning spells:
Druids have access to the most summons of all classes. Nature Spirit summons a forest creature that can cast “Spike Growth” for free and also summons another servant. Then you can call a large elemental and a small elemental, along with a Flame Sphere if you want.
Especially if one were to combine all these summons with the abilities of a Cleric (like Shadowheart), who also summons magical weapons and divine servants, then you have a small army of companions that can absorb a lot of damage, so that “you spread the damage so far that nothing will ever really touch you”.
In conclusion, he states that the Druid, when summarized, is simply a pretty strong mix of many strengths:
The Druid is interesting. Because he is not a damage caster. He manipulates the battlefield like a god, and half the time the AI ensures they walk into your concentration spells. They walk through thorns, stand in moonbeams, and fall in ice storms. Your summons tank and move with misty step, so they give enemies a disadvantage in ranged attacks. Meanwhile, your DPS characters can sit back and enjoy the fruits of the Druid’s labor. That’s simply one of the strongest classes in the game, if people know how to play it. At least, Honor Mode was a picnic for me with the Druid.
