Initially, the developers wanted to address further issues with a new hotfix in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, the patch caused more crashes and had to be withdrawn. Those who played in the meantime could not use their save files. The issue has since been resolved.
What kind of hotfix is this?
- Hotfix 4 was released on August 16 at around 10:00 PM.
- The scope was a bit smaller than in previous hotfixes, but it was primarily intended to fix issues that hindered progress. You can find the patch notes on Steam.
- About 3 hours later, around 1:00 AM, the hotfix was already withdrawn again. The current state is thus hotfix 3.
This is the problem with the hotfix: As Larian Studios announced on Twitter, hotfix 4 led to many crashes. To allow players to at least play normally, there was a rollback.
However, this caused a new problem: those who had already played with the hotfix now no longer have access to their saves. An “Incompatible Version” is displayed.
Only players who downloaded the hotfix are affected. However, the game only updates when it is closed. This means that any save made with hotfix 4 is invalid, even if it actually occurred after the rollback.
Players are now without access to thousands of their save games. In the MeinMMO editorial team, up to 4 hours of gameplay are temporarily “lost.” The hotfix is supposed to return as soon as the crashes are fixed.
Update at 6:47 PM: The hotfix is live again, and the save files are working again.
“3 hours of saves. I think I’ll go touch grass”
Players now don’t quite know what to do. Continuing with the old save file is not an option for many, as they would have to redo everything.
On Reddit, there are some “helpful” suggestions like: checking if the family is still alive or touching grass. Others use the forced break to take a breath or create a new character.
Users remind that the save games are not lost forever. They are just currently inaccessible but will be back once hotfix 4 is reinstalled. They just need to be patient for now.
Larian Studios is also preparing the first “real” patch in addition to the hotfixes. When exactly it will be released is not yet determined, but it is supposed to fix a bunch of problems and potentially even bring new features:
