In Baldur’s Gate 3 a YouTuber now shows what is possible with Min/Maxing: A lone fighter, without companions, has defeated the most powerful boss in the role-playing game, the “Fiend” Raphael with 666 HP, and his demonic minions. And that in 2 rounds. The key to the strategy was a specific poison, a magical bow, and arrows, lots of arrows.
Warning: There are spoilers for a dungeon in Act 3 in the text. The video shows the final battle.
Why is the kill particularly impressive?
- The character with which this kill is achieved in just 2 rounds is a fighter: The fighter is actually considered, as PC Gamer points out, to be a rather ‘boring’ class in Dungeons and Dragons, as he basically just hits things. In our tier list for Baldur’s Gate 3, he is counted as A-Tier. The NPC fighter in Baldur’s Gate is the least popular NPC.
- At higher levels, wizards learn increasingly powerful spells that can wipe the whole screen – which is why Larian is hesitant to raise the level in Baldur’s Gate 3 above 12. Fighters simply get better at hitting things.
- Nevertheless, it is now a fighter who handles the fiercest boss fight in Baldur’s Gate 3 alone and in just 2 rounds – and that on the hardest level “Tactician.”
Archer fires 9 shots in Round 1
How did the player do it? The player says that the key to the fight was a special poison called “Crawler Mucus Poison.” He found a lot of this poison in Act 2 and had never used it before.
The poison causes targets to be paralyzed, to be unable to take actions, and to suffer critical damage each time they are hit, as long as the attacker is within 3 meters.
The YouTuber Thorusin says: For this fight, the poison is ideal because the boss Raphael has many hit points and a high armor value.
Additionally, the player uses the legendary bow, Gontr Mael, which allows the player to cast “Haste” on themselves and grants 3 bonus attacks.
An amulet ensures that the target becomes vulnerable to physical damage.
Furthermore, the fighter also uses a special arrow against Fiends and a ring that guarantees additional critical hits.
With all the bonuses and the fighter’s “Action Surge” ability that grants her additional bonus attacks, she ends up with 9 attacks in the first round:
- 3 standard attacks
- 3 bonus attacks from Haste on the legendary bow – Here’s how to find it
- 3 additional attacks from Action Surge
This is how the fight unfolds: Already after the first round, the boss’s hit points drop from 666 to 80, and he is also paralyzed.
In the second round, the fighter uses her six attacks (Action Surge is gone) to take out the boss’s minions with the “Arrow of Many Targets” and the fight is already over. With these arrows, she targets multiple opponents.
The example of the fighter shows what happens when you effectively use “all those super important” potions, arrows, and special items that you hoard but never use.
This was an example of a plan that works wonderfully. But it’s also nice to see the plans that fail spectacularly:
