A player wanted to acquire Baldur’s Gate 3 for his library but failed in the purchasing process. He contacted the customer service of Larian – and received a surprising response. With his story, he is currently exciting the community.
Larian has created a massive hit with Baldur’s Gate 3, winning big at the Game Awards 2023: The game won in five categories. Game Director Swen Vincke took the stage in his plate armor and was celebrated for it.
Baldur’s Gate conquered Steam on its final release day: The team expected 100,000 concurrent players, but over 700,000 showed up. Even eight months after the release, the developer studio continues to positively surprise the community.
On Reddit, the user “TeenyGremlin” reports how he approached Larian’s customer service with an inquiry. He didn’t expect a response to his “niche question,” but then Larian got back to him and totally blew him away.
Larian donates a copy to the library
What was his inquiry to customer service? The user “TeenyGremlin” writes on April 5th on Reddit that Larian’s customer service just blew him away. He works in a public library in the USA. The “tax-funded” institution is not allowed to pay taxes on purchased items, but he wanted to acquire a physical copy of Baldur’s Gate 3 for his library.
So he reached out to Larian’s customer service in January to ask for an alternative billing method or a tax-exempt account in their shop. He submitted the paperwork but didn’t expect Larian, as a Belgian company, to be able to help.
He was “95% sure that the answer would be no” but had to try because he loved the game so much. The silence that lasted three months did not surprise him. “I assumed the answer would either be no or that the strange niche question got lost in someone’s inbox. It wasn’t a big deal, and I knew I had done my best,” he writes.
How did the developers surprise the player? According to the user, Larian is actually sending a physical copy of Baldur’s Gate 3 to the library.
After three months, he received a response to his inquiry:
Today I finally received a response from Larian that they would donate a copy for my library. I am absolutely overwhelmed. Someone took the time to respond to a nearly unanswerable question, months after I had already been sure they had forgotten.
I don’t know if someone has been trying to find an answer to this question for three months, or if it was forgotten and someone just noticed and decided to pick it up again, but I am overwhelmed.
I have never experienced a company that has worked so hard to provide an answer and/or an alternative solution. I know it’s a small thing, but it was so cool.
“This is so wholesome and I love it”
How does the community react? The top comment with over 2,880 upvotes is from “LazyEights”. He writes: “They must know how difficult it is to work in a library where so many sensitive books are lying around.” This is a reference to a scene in Act 3 of the game, a short video about it can be seen on Reddit.
Other users praise the development team for their dedication. Here are a few comments summarized:
- KnutWhitebear writes: “I always feel happy when I hear such wholesome stories, and I’m glad your library has dedicated staff like you.”
- Sethroque notes: “Considering the success of the game, your ticket must have been buried under a lot of other inquiries. But with quality work like this, the wait is worth it, very cool.”
- Darkassassin18E states: “In general, I have really liked how Larian has handled everything related to them so far, and this response from them just emphasizes it even more.”
- SadakoTetsuwan jokes: “There’s a good chance someone has been trying to find an answer to this question for three months before someone said at lunch, ‘Why don’t we just donate a copy?’ and one person is now halfway to a degree in international tax law […].”
- shaunwthompson comments: “This is so wholesome and I love it.”
- frank-1 writes: “Unironically, this is exactly what makes their games so good behind the scenes. Those are good people over there.”
