Have you always wanted to have more brains? Then we have good news for you: in Baldur’s Gate 3 you can easily acquire a whole brain. It even follows you around and is grotesquely quite cute.
What kind of companion is this?
- In Baldur’s Gate 3, there are several types of characters that can accompany you: the classic companions with their own story, “pets,” and summons.
- Some of these NPCs you learn through spells or can find later in the game, such as the dog Kratzer or the owlbear cub.
- Right at the beginning of the game, you can already lay the foundation for a special pet.
Spoiler Alert: The story surrounding the companion is hidden and secret. If you want to find out for yourself who the brain is and how to get it as a companion, it’s better not to read any further at this point.
What kind of pet is this? “Us” is an intellect devourer, a brain with legs and tentacles that feeds on the thoughts of the living. You encounter Us right at the beginning of the game on the Nautiloid.
In the second room, you can hear the creature’s voice calling for help. If you approach, you will find a brain in the body of Myrnath, who lies there with a opened skull.
The brain speaks to you and considers you a friend. With a roll of Dexterity or Strength, you can free it from its “prison,” after which it introduces itself as “Us” when you ask it.
How to get “Us”
Some users on Reddit have figured out how you can permanently acquire Us.
First, you need to free Us in the prologue. You can then injure the brain with a fairly difficult Dexterity roll (DC 15), but you don’t have to do that. Some users report that Us even receives a penalty to its movement because only two of its legs function properly.
In any case, Us will accompany you on the Nautiloid afterward. However, it must survive and must not die. After the emergency landing, the brain is lost.
Later, in Act 2, you can meet Us again. In the depths beneath the Moonlight Towers, there is a mindflayer colony. Here, Us is trapped in a cage. Open the cage, and Us will accompany you. You can summon the brain as a “Familiar” at any time.
As a summon, Us can help in battle and die. However, the brain does not die permanently, just like Kratzer, and you can’t summon it again until the next rest.
Us is not the most useful companion but can be summoned by any class – so it definitely provides assistance. Normally, familiars and animal companions are only available to specific classes:
