From the team of Baldur’s Gate 3, lead writer Adam Smith gave an interview with GamesRadar+ (via Gamesradar.com). In it, he discusses the new monk class and talks about its advantages.

Why are monks so good in Baldur’s Gate 3?
These are the arguments: Smith explains: “Monks are great because they are so fast.” By level 6 or 7, you become really fast and jump around everywhere.
Additionally, as a monk, you can deflect opposing projectiles with the “Deflect Missiles” ability. According to Smith, it feels “like you have a lightsaber.” Even for solo players, monks are said to be a good choice. Because besides their high speed, they also deal a lot of damage and can stealth well.
In RPGs, monks are not as frequently represented as the typical warriors, wizards, archers, and clerics.
What is the best roleplay class? If you base the choice of the best class solely on roleplay, then the monk does not win. In the eyes of Adam Smith, the paladin class has a clear advantage here. With this choice, you swore to uphold law and justice.
The paladin is probably still my favorite class. There are certain things you can do that break the oath, and if you do that, you will literally be visited by a guy named Oathbreaker, this dark knight. That’s really cool. It’s that whole moment just for this one class. Then comes the moment when you say: ‘Oh shit, I just shifted the power of cosmic balance.’
