The druid can transform into a variety of animal forms. The owl bear is a colossal creature that looks simultaneously majestic and adorable. With the aid of another spell, players have now discovered a tactic in Baldur’s Gate 3 to defeat enemies with just one blow.
How does the strategy work? The newly discovered tactic only works when your enemies are on a level below you. On an elevation, you transform into an owl bear with your druid and cast the “Enlarge” spell.
Subsequently, you jump as a massive owl bear from the elevation down onto the enemies. This way, you can flatten as many foes as possible in advance without having started the fight. This saves you some moves in battle.
What this looks like is shown by user Fishbleb in the Reddit forum:
How much damage does this deal? A user on X (formerly Twitter) explains that with his owl bear, which weighs five tons, he has dealt 821 damage. Actually, the damage would have been even double that, as the enemy succeeded in a strength saving throw.
By comparison: the best weapon you can find at level 1 deals 2d6 slashing and 1d4 fire damage, so a maximum of 16 damage.
If the owl bear hasn’t been enlarged, the attack is likely in the 100 range (via reddit.com). The damage is said to scale with vertical distance. A user suspects that the damage increases by 1d6 every 10 feet.
Since Baldur’s Gate 3 follows the D&D rules, weight likely also plays a role. The heavier the falling object, the higher the damage.
Druids can obtain the owl bear early in the game. From level 6 they can transform into the massive creature. There is even a cute owl bear cub that you can take as a companion if you rescue it.
The community is excited about the tactic
In the comments section, many players are excited about the possibilities the game offers. They didn’t know such a tactic was even possible and had instead struggled to diminish the ranks of enemies with other attacks.
We’ve picked some quotes reflecting the enthusiasm of the players:
- Alaerei: ‘Okay, that was damn impressive, Lmao.’
- No-Werewolf5615: ‘And I thought I had killed him quickly. So much for Astarion, the owl bear is the new surprise attack.’
- Forgotten_Wings: ‘A certified D&D moment. I love this game.’
And just as the users in the comments section feel, so do other players in many areas of Baldur’s Gate 3. A German strategy expert explains what makes Baldur’s Gate 3 so special for him:
