Queen Azshara’s plans in WoW have always been quite obscure and unclear. Patch 8.3 finally provides clarity on what the Naga wanted.
Queen Azshara is a much-discussed character in World of Warcraft . Considered to be the most powerful sorceress on the planet, she is deemed wise and foresighted, albeit boastful and rather arrogant. Very little is known about her motives and actions in Patch 8.2, until she gets swallowed by N’Zoth’s darkness at the end. While it was known that Sylvanas had made a pact with Azshara, the implications of that remained unclear.
Patch 8.3 now provides some clarification, as Azshara has a new role.
Where does Azshara appear? In Patch 8.3, Azshara is part of the Raid Ny’alotha. However, she is not a boss but is currently held captive and tortured by the Dark Inquisitor Xanesh because she wanted to betray N’Zoth. The details of her plan are not immediately revealed. However, Azshara apparently discusses this after the boss battle is completed and she is freed.
What was Azshara’s plan? The colleagues at WoWhead have already extracted the sound data, including Azshara’s lines. After and during the fight, she has several lines. She says:
Free me! Only I have the means to defeat N’Zoth!
(Presumably directed at Furorion) Mind your words, whelpling. A queen keeps her promises.
Listen closely, for I will only say this once: Despite all his bluster, N’Zoth was always the weakest of his kind. But a remnant of their power still exists that can be used against him.
I would have driven this blade into his corrupted heart myself if you had not interfered with my plans. No matter. Xal’atath belongs to you, mortals.
Aim true. If your first strike misses, you will not live long enough to attempt another.
Now go and do as you wish. Intermediaries and heralds weary me. The true seat of power calls. And I intend to claim it for myself.
The naga queen evidently planned to free herself from her pact with N’Zoth and personally kill the Old God. As already speculated in many theories, the blade Xal’atath is an important key for this. The dagger is now “empty”, as the entity Xal’atath has been freed and wanders the cosmos. It is therefore likely that N’Zoth can be imprisoned in the blade.
What was the pact with Sylvanas? What exactly the naga queen negotiated with Azshara is still unclear. However, it is certain that Nathanos, on behalf of Sylvanas, brought the blade Xal’atath to Azshara. In doing so, he led traitors of the Horde and a large part of the Alliance fleet to their doom. It is possible that the pact merely contained this arrangement in the sense of “I will plunge the traitors and Alliance forces into death, you will bring me the dagger to defeat N’Zoth”.
However, there is another voiceline from Azshara that indicates new conflicts. This could also just be a flashback or a vision:
Treacherous banshee… do you think I am blind and do not see what darkness you wish to unleash?
Azshara’s and Sylvanas’ plan has a logical problem: However, with all these revelations, there is one thing that is hardly noticed. The blade Xal’atath did not come into Sylvanas’ hands “just like that”. It was heroes of the Horde who gave Sylvanas the blade. More importantly, N’Zoth himself ensured that the Horde found and took the blade in any case. After all, N’Zoth has lured the players into the Crucible of Storms multiple times, fully knowing what they would find there.
It is therefore quite possible that N’Zoth is pursuing a much more complex plan and has also foreseen that Xal’atath will ultimately end up back in the hands of the heroes.
Then it is also conceivable that N’Zoth does not die at the end of Patch 8.3, but only makes everyone believe so. After all, he is the master of madness and visions. It remains exciting.
