Pretty much every gamer uses Discord. However, scammers are now using a new trick to steal your account. MeinMMO explains how you can protect yourself.
The most important points at a glance
- Currently, messages are circulating on Discord claiming that you have supposedly been “exposed”. You will receive an invitation to a server.
- The messages can even come from supposed friends.
- Under no circumstances should you click on the corresponding links. Change your password immediately instead.
What kind of trick is this? As some users report on Twitter, they receive private messages from their friends’ accounts. According to these, perverse pictures or information about them are circulating.
They are said to have sent naked pictures of themselves and are now being exposed on a public Discord to defame them. An invitation to the respective Discord is also attached.
The respective contact will then block you directly because they “don’t want anything to do with you.” A click on the link leads you to the server, and you will reportedly be asked for authentication. You should definitely not do that.
Verification steals your password, hacks your account
That’s why it’s dangerous: As one user reports, his account was stolen after authentication. A stranger logged in to his account, sent further scam messages, and subsequently blocked people.
Corresponding messages can therefore also come from friends’ and acquaintances’ accounts and not just from strangers on a server. Since the contact blocks you directly, you can’t at least ask them via Discord whether the message is actually serious.
Furthermore, the links and the respective servers often differ, making it impossible to warn against just one specific server. Therefore, this new trick poses particularly high risk potential.
This is how you can protect yourself: If you receive messages that are phrased similarly, you should definitely not click the link. Notify your respective friends outside of Discord.
