In Elden Ring, the first major problem associated with hackers has now occurred. Players report that they have been thrown into an endless death spiral by users of a nasty exploit. MeinMMO shows you how they managed to escape.
What is this exploit? According to reports from those affected, hackers can corrupt the save game of victims in the PvP of Elden Ring.
They invade the game world of the target, cause the game to crash, and once you log back in, your character falls into an endlessly repeating cycle of death.

How can I defend against it? Ultimately, you are virtually powerless if a hacker targets you with this exploit.
However, you can prevent the problem by regularly making backups of your save files.
Here’s how to free yourself if it’s already too late: In the Elden Ring subreddit, the user Draiganedig presented some potential steps that can help you escape the death spiral.
- Every time you reload the game after a fatal fall, you have an extremely short window of time before you fall to death again.
- Right at that moment, you need to close the game using Alt-F4. This will give you more time to open the map when you start the game next time. It’s crucial that you close the game before your screen shows “You are dead”.
- When you load your save, open your map as quickly as possible and press the corresponding key that shows you the list of all Sites of Grace and try to select a point and travel there as quickly as possible.
- The time window is extremely short, so you will likely need several attempts.
This trick has already worked for some affected players and may help you escape the spiral with a bit of luck and skill. Currently, no other fix is known.
Are consoles affected as well? Currently, it doesn’t look like that. It seems unlikely that this exploit can also be used on consoles.
On PC, hackers and cheaters have significantly more tools at their disposal, while console players usually remain spared from such problems.
It’s not the first serious exploit in a game by FromSoftware
Such exploits are unfortunately not uncommon in games by FromSoftware. Just before the release, all servers of Dark Souls 1-3 had to be taken offline. Hackers discovered an exploit, which can potentially crash the PCs of the victims completely.
Later, it even emerged that this exploit was apparently known to the developers for years and has never been fixed since then.
Since there are significant technical parallels to Elden Ring, as they use the same engine, the community has already feared in advance that similar problems could arise.
Publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware have initiated countermeasures, for example, Elden Ring is the first game to use the Easy Anti-Cheat tool.
However, that seems to help little against such issues so far.
