The Titans from Attack on Titan are a significant threat to humanity. In the anime and manga, they are depicted like humans, just without visible genitalia. However, for the government in Malaysia, the removal of the genitalia was insufficient. Therefore, they altered the depiction of the Titans in the manga.
What do the censored Titans look like? Many images from the manga circulated on social media, where the Titans are seen wearing black shorts. In the original, the Titans’ bare bottoms and pelvis are visible, but in the Malaysian version, they are covered by fabric.

Since the female Titan has suggested breasts on her body, she was even given a dress that covers her upper body as well. One fan took the absurd censorship as an opportunity to create some images showing the Titans from the anime in these clothes – however, in a colorful, stylish version (via airayukihime on X).
The censorship was only implemented in the version of the Malaysian magazine Kreko. However, the magazine was reportedly discontinued during the story as readers shifted more to online platforms for reading (via Reddit). Some users joke that it must have been too much for them to cover the Titans with shorts. Especially in the grand finale, this would have caused problems.

Strict censorship laws affect Attack on Titan
Why was censorship implemented? Some users wonder why the naked bodies must be covered, while the brutal fights are not censored. This has to do with the censorship laws in Malaysia. Particularly in Southeast Asian countries, there are strict laws regarding nudity:
- In Malaysia: Even the mildest forms of nudity and sex must be deleted or covered up in all types of media.
- In neighboring Indonesia, there are similar laws. For example, the cover of the 6th volume of Chainsaw Man was censored here. Reze wears clothes here; usually, she is naked on the cover (via alvinlaurentt on X).
In Germany, according to the MDR, the laws are somewhat relaxed due to artistic freedom. There must be a balance between youth protection and artistic freedom. You have probably seen the result of this in bookstores: Many mangas with erotic content are shrink-wrapped, found with an “18+” sticker on the shelf.
What’s next for Attack on Titan? Both the manga and the anime are finished. This month, a new chapter of the manga is expected, likely focusing on the events after the last episode.
