Do you remember the turn-based PvP game Atlas Reactor by Trion? The game is now returning under Gamigo – but as a cooperative PvE game.
What was Atlas Reactor? The game by Trion represented a kind of mix between Overwatch and XCOM. You could choose from several heroes, each with different abilities. You then had to cleverly deploy them in tactical turn-based battles against other players to achieve victory.
To win, you needed to deliver 5 eliminations first or achieve the most victories within 20 rounds. The team that did this first won the round. A 1-vs-1 mode for duels was also available.
The return of a discontinued game
Why did the game fail? Atlas Reactor simply could not captivate enough players. It started as a Free2Play game, then briefly switched to a premium model, only to revert to Free2Play again.
Atlas Reactor was special due to the turn-based combat and tactical options, but this simply did not align with the zeitgeist. Therefore, it was discontinued at the end of June 2019.
How is the game returning now? Gamigo announced that it will be bringing back Atlas Reactor under the new title Atlas Rogues. However, the name is not the only thing that is changing.
- Instead of PvP battles, you will now experience cooperative PvE encounters
- You will fight against NPC enemies in a team of four
- The story is in the foreground
- You can unlock new heroes over time
- In missions, you will receive rewards such as new equipment
- It is possible to even play Atlas Rogues alone in a single-player mode
- The turn-based combat from Atlas Reactor will also be retained in Atlas Rogues, but is intended to be faster
What is the story about? The last reactor in the city of Atlas is on the brink of explosion. To prevent this, heroes unite to stand against hostile forces to save the reactor from detonation.
You will fight through several locations in the city, where even boss enemies are lurking. It is necessary to utilize the tactical abilities of each hero in the team.
How can a PvP game be transformed into a PvE game? As it turned out, Atlas Reactor had a prototype of a narrative player co-op mode during its development phase. The developers have now essentially revived and are further developing it.
When will Atlas Rogues be released? The cooperative PvE game is set to initially start in an Early Access phase. The date will be announced in the coming days.
If you are interested in turn-based combat and would like to see it in an MMO, then keep an eye on the game Dreadlands.
