Studio Wildcard, the team behind the dinosaur survival game ARK, announced at the Game Awards 2018 a pirate MMO called Atlas for over 40,000 players simultaneously.
Pirates, sea monsters, shipbuilding, territorial control… Atlas could provide MMO fans with what they wished for from Sea of Thieves. And the best part: it’s actually playable soon.
A gigantic pirate MMO
What is Atlas? Atlas is a gigantic MMO set in a pirate scenario. In this, you will also encounter monsters.
- You will be exploring a gigantic world with over 40,000 other players simultaneously
- The world covers 45,000 square kilometers and 700 landmasses
- You build your own ship plank by plank, customizing it with colorful sails and giving it a name
- From other players and NPCs, you recruit a crew with which you steer your ship. Each crew member takes a specific station such as cannons or the steering wheel
- PvP takes place – aside from safe harbors – everywhere in the world. You can take ships from other crews or conquer their forts
- Improve your hero with 300 skills in 15 categories and learn special feats
- All items, including buildings, have stats and can be improved
- Complete a variety of quests, which even split into sub-quests
- On the world map, you conquer territories that you defend against other players
- You build your own buildings and entire cities, expanding them into an empire
- On the seas, you will not only encounter pirates but also a lot of monsters
When is Atlas coming out? Studio Wildcard will start the Early Access version of Atlas on December 13. You will then be able to play via Steam.
Create your own worlds
What is special about Atlas? Atlas allows you to create mods using the Atlas Dev Kits. These range from custom vehicles to entire worlds, underwater zones, continents, and more which you create according to your vision.
How do Sea of Thieves and Atlas differ? Atlas aims to offer you significantly more than Sea of Thieves. The fact that you can explore a massive world with over 40,000 players distinguishes the games. Atlas wants to be a true MMO, while Sea of Thieves is more geared towards smaller groups of players.
Players remain skeptical
This is how players react to Atlas: There is not only anticipation but also some skepticism in the community. Atlas sounds extremely ambitious. If Studio Wildcard can actually implement the ideas, then we are expecting a huge online game. However, some believe that Atlas might be too ambitious. Additionally, some have concerns about performance. Because ARK still shows that the development team has deficits in this area.
From December 13, we will know more about Atlas and see for ourselves what the MMO has to offer.
