League of Legends is firmly in the hands of Asians in 2021. The lead in e-sports is noticeable at the LoL Worlds 2021. Half of the main round has been played: all 6 teams from Europe and the USA are in positions that would mean elimination before the knockout rounds. The favorites from China and South Korea are even stronger than feared: Showmaker and Viper are the stars of the World Championship so far.
This is what was thought before the start of the LoL Worlds 2021: Before the LoL Worlds began, the odds for the teams from the USA and Europe were already viewed critically:
- It was expected that all 3 teams from the USA would be eliminated in the main round without a chance
- The EU team Rogue was also seen as having no chance: They landed in the death group A, with the two tournament favorites DWG Kia (World Champion 2020) and FunPlus Phoenix (World Champion 2019)
- The European team Fnatic was seen as having good chances in group C, as they had “relatively easy” opponents from Asia
- The European team MAD Lions was even regarded as the favorite to win group D, as there was “only” the aging team Gen G. from South Korea and the US team “Team Liquid”
USA stand at 2-7
This is how things are really going for the USA: For the USA, things are going as badly as expected:
Cloud 9, the team with starting player Perkz, ended up in the death group A after the play-ins – the “Showmaker” show is currently in progress there. The Korean midlaner plays LoL as if from another star. Cloud 9 has lost all 3 games
100 Thieves, the champion team from the USA with the German Felix “Abedagge” Braun, has only won 1 game in group B, against the underdogs from Japan. 100 Thieves would need one or better, even two miracles against T1 with Faker or the favorites Edward Gaming from China to advance
Team Liquid in group D has drawn a strong team from China, “LNG Esports,” and promptly lost against them. Team Liquid sensationally won one game against MAD Lions, but stands with 1-2 before elimination.
Europe is also only at 2-7
This is how things are for the teams from Europe: Rogue is hopeless in group A, there was a victory against Cloud 9, but against the tournament favorites DWG Kia and FunPlus Phoenix, as expected, they lost.
Hope carrier Fnatic lost their ADC before the start of the group stage due to Upset and subsequently suffered 3 consecutive defeats. They even failed at “relatively easy” tasks like PSG Talon and Hanwha Life, the “Church of Chovy,”. Things look very bleak.
The co-favorite for the tournament victory, MAD Lions Esports, managed to win against the strongest in the group, Gen G. But they also lost against the “play-ins” team LNG Esports and the team Liquid that was actually hopelessly outmatched. Although MAD Lions is still most likely to advance to the main round, at the moment the team is the biggest disappointment of the LoL Worlds.
Showmaker and Viper have not died even once after 3 games
Who are the stars of the tournament so far? The midlaner of DWG Kia, Showmaker, is playing a dominant Worlds. In his 3 games he has not died even once. He has a KDA of 35 with stats of 14/0/21. This is even stronger than expected.
Similarly brutal is the ADC of Edward Gaming, Viper. He is also regarded as one of the best players in the world and has not been sent back to the well even once during the 3 games. Viper has a KDA of 31 with 11/0/21.
In fact, 31 players from Asia are leading in KDA. Only in 32nd place does Santorin, the jungler of Team Liquid, appear.
League of Legends currently seems firmly in the hands of the stars from Asia.
The star of “Keria” is currently rising at the LoL Worlds 2021. He has a KDA of 10.0 with 3/3/27 and is thus in 8th place among the participants:
