There will be no further titles for Assassin’s Creed this year, but Ubisoft is planning a mobile MMO specifically for the Chinese market.
The games from the Assassin’s Creed series have so far been very similar in gameplay, but now a MMO in the Assassin’s world is set to be released specifically for the Chinese market. But not just any MMO, it will also be a special mobile MMO, designed for mobile devices like smartphones or tablets.
For this, Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft has teamed up with the Chinese mobile publisher Ourpalm: Work on the MMO version of Assassin’s Creed in Beijing has been ongoing since 2014. Further information about the game and whether it is also intended for the western market is still not available.
China – different countries, different customs
In China, some franchises known in the West, such as Borderlands or Call of Duty, have MMO offshoots – this is rooted in the differing gaming culture in the East compared to the West. Many Chinese computers would not be able to properly run current Western games. Additionally, online games are popular in China.
Some suspect that this is due to the effects of the now-discontinued “One-Child Policy” and other peculiarities, which have made “PC cafés” a social meeting point for Chinese youth, while we in the West prefer to game at home. However, in recent years, the trend in Asia has strongly shifted towards mobile gaming. Ubisoft seems to be acknowledging this trend now.
