Even streamer Asmongold has nothing good to say about the new cinematic in World of Warcraft. He finds it illogical and simply bad.
Yesterday, Blizzard unexpectedly released a new cinematic for World of Warcraft, which can also be viewed on the PTR of Patch 9.2. The cinematic addresses an important moment in the story of Sylvanas Windrunner, the former Banshee Queen, who is now in the hands of the heroes after the raid Sanctum of Domination.
Streamer Asmongold shares his opinion on the video – and the criticism is often devastating.
Spoiler warning: The article discusses the cinematic “Shattered Legacy” and thus story content from Patch 9.2. Those who do not want to be spoiled should not continue reading.
What can be seen in the cinematic? The cinematic shows the unconscious Sylvanas, surrounded by Uther, Baine, Jaina, Thrall, and Bolvar in Oribos. The heroes debate whether they should awaken Sylvanas, as she knows the Mastermind’s plan. While some oppose it, Uther ultimately decides to make contact with Sylvanas. In a sort of dream world, he clarifies to Sylvanas that she was simultaneously the Ranger-General of Silvermoon, but also the Banshee Queen who set Teldrassil ablaze. Sylvanas then regains consciousness – and apparently accepts the two sides of her existence.
How Asmongold reacts: In a nearly hour-long rant, Asmongold hardly has anything good to say about the cinematic. For him, the video is a major “retcon” of one of the most important and best WoW characters.
From his perspective, the new cinematic implies that Sylvanas has basically been under the Mastermind’s control since Warcraft. All that made Sylvanas cool and a strong, self-determined female character for years has been destroyed in one fell swoop.
You took one of the best characters in the entire story and now say that everything brilliant and cunning she has done was actually just because of a bald idiot with overly obvious nipples pulling the strings in the background, who no one has ever heard of?
At the same time, Asmongold finds it illogical what the motivations of Jaina, Baine, and Thrall are. The fact that they actually discuss whether to trust Sylvanas is nothing more than “fan service.” Because if these characters would think for a moment, they would know that without Sylvanas’ knowledge, they would have absolutely no chance. After all, the Mastermind could completely subjugate them with a single hand gesture.
However, Asmongold also has a few nice words about the cinematic. The sheer representation is good, the quality is significantly higher than previous cinematics in the past. It would only become problematic when the characters open their mouths.
What do you think of the cinematic? Do you share Asmongold’s opinion? Or do you like the direction in which everything is developing?
