The developers of the upcoming MMORPG Ashes of Creation have introduced the political system. Coalitions and government alliances are also possible here. Hopefully, this works better than in Jamaica.
In Ashes of Creation, every decision you make as a player has an impact on the game world. The world features several so-called nodes.
A settlement arises at a node. Depending on what players do there, this also affects their surroundings. Excessive fishing might awaken a sea monster, while the depletion of resources from a mountain could potentially awaken a sleeping dragon. It is therefore important to proceed with caution.

Leaders bring order to chaos
This is where the political system comes into play. At the beginning, some players gather at a node to build a settlement, which grows over time. More and more players want to be active in this area. This can lead to disputes and fights among each other. Everyone pursues their own goals, and chaos can break out. To counter this, there must be rulers who maintain order.
For leadership purposes, a “City Hall” is established in a town. The players who feel called to take the lead meet in this hall and discuss together what rules and laws will be introduced, which direction the node will develop, how high the taxes for the city’s residents will be, which buildings should be constructed or expanded next, and whether it is necessary to tear down structures.
Decisions in the City Hall then have an impact on the development of the nodes.
Should the currently available resources be used for a larger marketplace to stimulate trade, or would an auction house be more sensible? Ashes of Creation presents challenging decisions, as – just like in real politics – everyone has their own views and pursues their own interests.
Bringing this into harmony is not easy – Jamaica greets.

Every decision has consequences
The neighboring city might interfere with one’s political goals, which is why a war should be declared. All players coming from other cities are designated as enemies. Those who take them down will receive a reward.
Or one can forge a partnership with another city and establish a trade route along which caravans travel back and forth transporting goods. However, not all players may be happy with how things are currently going. It is then possible for these players to settle elsewhere or incite a revolt that topples the current leaders and replaces them with new ones.
All these decisions in turn affect the node, which can then develop in other directions. A dungeon could open up, attracting adventurers with treasures, or a horde of monsters might notice the city and launch an invasion. Perhaps the trade caravan travels through a forest and the creatures there feel disturbed, leading them to ambush the transports.
Every decision in Ashes of Creation has an impact, whether in terms of politics or the game world. How this plays out, you can try for yourself in the upcoming Alpha 0. This begins on December 15 and offers a 16 km² playable area with three nodes.
