The spin-off Apocalypse for the MMORPG Ashes of Creation will start soon. For many players, the launch of Apocalypse is the first opportunity to take a look at the MMORPG’s combat system. What do you need to know before the release?
Basics: The article was originally created on December 18, 2018, as the first release of Apocalypse was planned for that date. We updated the article on September 19, 2019, as the game is now entering Early Access.
When does it start? Apocalypse will be released on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at 9:00 PM German time. The PvP standalone of Ashes of Creation will officially be released as Early Access and is planned to be expanded over time.
As many players are eagerly awaiting the standalone, we have summarized the most important information for you.

1. Apocalypse will be a PvP game
While Ashes of Creation is planned as a massive MMORPG with an open world, the spin-off “Apocalypse” will have one focus: instanced PvP. In this, you will be able to extensively test the servers and the combat system.
Apocalypse will also rely on a hybrid system for combat. You can choose to attack other players using tab-targeting or in action mode.
2. It is free to play for everyone
Just like Epic Games with their Battle Royale spin-off of Fortnite, Intrepid Studios focuses on a free-to-play version for the PvP game. You can register for free on the website and then download the client.
The future MMORPG will also not cost anything to purchase, but a subscription model with monthly fees is planned.
3. Apocalypse starts with Battle Royale
The first game mode included in Apocalypse is a Battle Royale with 100 players. The game continues until only one person is left alive. As with other “Battle Royale” games, the playing field shrinks over time.
4. What happens after the launch
After the release, work will first focus on the Fortress mode. This involves one faction of players defending a fortress while the other faction attacks. This part of Apocalypse will be particularly exciting because the conquest of fortresses will be a core feature of the MMORPG.
For the further future, a cooperative horde mode is planned. In this mode, players are to defend a fortress against attacking creatures, which will become stronger wave by wave.
5. You will be able to transfer progress to the main game
To ensure that later MMORPG players also benefit from Apocalypse, there will be the option to transfer some progress to the main game. This will primarily concern achievements and cosmetic content.
