Asheron’s Call will close this month. In a video, a veteran says goodbye.
The transition of the MMORPG teams from Turbine to independence marked the end of an MMORPG classic. Asheron’s Call will close on January 31. The MMORPG dates back to the “pre-WoW” generation, launching in 1999 as a competitor to games like Ultima Online and Everquest.
And since its inception in 1999, the 74-year-old man in this video has been playing Asheron’s Call.
His granddaughter filmed a video of him and posted the clip on reddit. 300,000 people have already seen it.
In the video, the MMORPG veteran showcases his characters, talks about friends he has made over the years. The granddaughter is saddened that her grandfather is losing the game that holds so many memories for him. He has experienced weddings and funerals in the MMORPG.
The granddaughter now hopes to find a new game for her grandfather. But he believes: “Compared to this game, everything else looks like trash.”
