In New World , a player shows a PvP fight, demonstrating how he takes down two unsuspecting opponents with a musket and rapier. MeinMMO author Schuhmann says, this is the power fantasy I initially wished for from New World.
What do we see in the clip?
- It’s actually a typical “Look, look how good I am at PvP” clip. In other MMORPGs, such PvP clips are traditionally accompanied by music from Linkin Park and come across better in black and white.
- A player takes aim with the musket, like in a shooter, and attacks 2 players guarding a flag. He regularly switches to melee, where he performs with a rapier and rolls around wildly.
- The musket guy, stylishly dressed in gray and wearing a floppy hat, dominates his two somewhat unsuspecting opponents, who look surprised that someone is actually attacking in PvP. He comes off casually and triumphs in the end.
“Power Fantasy” of the Musketeer with Rapier and Musket
What makes the clip so special? In the clip, we see the “power fantasy” that New World promised initially. A unique spin in the MMORPG genre through the mix of musket and rapier, which are weapons from eras rarely found in MMORPGs, as they deviate from the typical “fantasy” schema of sword, bow, and axe.
This “musketeer” style of action is exactly the allure that the unusual setting of New World radiated when Amazon introduced the game years ago. Over time, however, the setting was diluted for political correctness reasons.
What diminishes the impact of the clip? Well, of course, the experts in the comments on reddit speak up, who are obviously perfect at PvP. They emphasize that the opponents of the musket guy are not exactly performing at a top level.
- One user says: “These two had no idea how to play PvP. I can’t understand why a player with axe and shield doesn’t just hang in your face.”
- “Why a player with a great axe and shield apparently runs around in medium armor without stamina is even more puzzling to me. It looks like the guy perhaps has a maximum of 7000 hitpoints.”
- Another Reddit comment deliciously dissects the bow user’s gameplay. He has “little experience,” and is presumably new.
A fourth calls the opponents “paper opponents”, a fifth says it’s “the dream of a musket player”, a sixth says: “Well, actually it was just a 1vs1”, the other player panicked and really did nothing.
Thus, the power fantasy of New World is quickly torpedoed when reddit experts explain that your outstanding kill clip had nothing to do with your great way of playing, but rather that the opponents were just easy targets.
Musketiers probably never had to hear that 400 years ago!
How important power fantasies are for the success of an MMO, we will explore on MeinMMO in this article:
