Processors can currently mainly be purchased from AMD and Intel. However, Nvidia, according to reports, also seems to be interested in the CPU market. So far, they mainly sell graphics cards and are very successful at it.
Anyone looking to buy a processor for their computer or gaming PC cannot avoid AMD or Intel. Besides, there is hardly any significant competition, at least in the USA and Europe. In China, there are already some strong processors that do not come from Intel or AMD, but they have hardly made it to Europe so far.
The processor market seems to be attractive enough that Nvidia is currently considering entering the market. According to Techradar.com, Nvidia may plan to enter the consumer processor market by developing a new Arm-based CPU.
Exclusive rights for “Windows on Arm” are expiring, which could be exciting for Nvidia
What is changing in the coming weeks? Currently, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips hold the exclusive rights for Windows on Arm. According to Arm CEO Rene Haas, this will change in 2024 as this contract has recently expired. This could especially benefit Nvidia, which could then acquire the rights.
Reports suggest that Nvidia might introduce its first extensive CPU lineup for desktop PCs between the end of 2025 and early 2026.
What does this mean? Qualcomm is already showing how much potential processors with ARM architecture can hold. There are already laptops with such CPUs, and Apple is already using models based on ARM.
Does this mean that we can play on an Nvidia CPU starting in 2025? Probably not, as ARM architecture is currently only partially suitable for PC gaming. The processors have so far been hardly optimized for PC games, as Qualcomm’s processors are primarily used in slim and lightweight business systems. And gaming generally plays hardly any role here.
Nevertheless, Nvidia in particular is likely to have the reserves and know-how to bring optimized processors for PC gamers to the market.
Intel holds the largest market share in CPUs in 2024 but is under immense pressure
What does this have to do with Intel? Intel remains the leader in the CPU sector and will still hold the largest market shares by the end of 2024. However, since problems with various processors have been piling up, competition is gaining ground: by the end of 2024, Intel will have a market share of 71.3 percent in the desktop sector, while AMD will reach 28.7 percent. This is reported by the market research company Mercury Research (via TomsHardware.com). Compared to the previous year (2023), Intel is said to have even lost 9.5 percent of market share.
AMD has recently scored a massive success with its new Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which Intel will have to catch up to first. With the new Core Ultra 9 285K (release October 2024), Intel has only partially succeeded in this. And now Nvidia may also be entering the fray as a third player.
Elon Musk and his team built a supercomputer in 19 days. Nvidia’s chief explains that it normally takes years to achieve this. This is also why Musk’s performance is impressive. According to Nvidia’s CEO, something like this has “never been done before” and is unlikely to be replicated quickly: Nvidia takes 1 year to build a supercomputer with thousands of graphics cards – Elon Musk does it in 19 days
