Who built a garage for 6.3 million dollars? Palmer Luckey is a 31-year-old American billionaire, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at 2.3 billion US dollars. He became known in the gaming scene primarily for founding the VR company Oculus. However, he is now mainly working in the defense industry.
However, for this particular circumstance, a hobby of Luckey’s is crucial: his love for historic luxury cars. His new mega-garage for his favorite toy in the form of luxury vintage cars is impressive.
What kind of garage is this, please? His collection of fine cars from the past decades has grown so large that he decided to build another garage opposite his approximately 12.5 million US dollar luxury villa in Newport Beach, California. This was also reported by Forbes.
He purchased a house and the land for about 3.8 million US dollars and had the property completely renovated for another 2.5 million US dollars. For the total of 650 square meters of floor space, four gigantic elevators for the cars are installed. The sole purpose of the building is to showcase and store his vintage car fleet. But after completion in late summer 2023, reality set in.
After Getting Stuck Comes the Lawsuit
What happened to Palmer Luckey in his luxury garage? The elevators for the cars tend to get stuck. The billionaire himself was reportedly unable to get out for more than ten minutes at least once, as the huge cabin was stuck between floors.
Such incidents are said to be occurring frequently. This would be a central problem for the house, as it would render the million-dollar construction virtually unusable or only partially usable for Luckey.
How does Luckey respond? The billionaire has filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California County of Orange against the construction company responsible for the renovation as well as against the elevator designers. Among other things, it is claimed that the car elevators were not built by hand as promised, but were cheaply purchased in China as mass-produced goods.
Both parties being accused deny the allegations and refer to the successful acceptance of the building in August 2023. However, at least one of the four elevators might have a problem, which the head of Custom Cabs, the elevator designers, should know.
According to Luckey’s lawyer, he was in the elevator when the billionaire himself was trapped there in his giant toy garage as a prisoner
