ARK: Survival Evolved was the survival hit of 2015. Milestone after milestone, the game attracted more and more players to the mysterious island, building homes, taming wild dinosaurs, and bringing death and destruction to enemy player tribes. In the not-too-distant future, specifically tomorrow, on December 16, the game will be part of the Game Preview program on Xbox One.
The game is even optimized for Xbox One so well that, according to Jesse Rapczak, co-founder of Studio Wildcard, players can host their own servers. 50-70 players should be able to play smoothly on these private servers. Normally, one would need an expensive PC for this and would have to figure out how to do it.
The only catch: This will likely consume all the processing power of the Xbox One. So, anyone wanting to do this will need a second console.
Furthermore, it is still unclear whether this feature will be available at launch since – just like with the PC version – ARK is still in development and numerous changes will be made before the release in June 2016.
Additionally, the controller scheme has been significantly improved compared to the PC version, the game’s director explained in an interview.
Mein-MMO thinks: In theory, hosting a private server on a second Xbox One is surely a nice thing. However, the average gamer will question who this is meant for. Very few gamers likely have a “spare” Xbox lying around in case the first one fails.
This feature – if it does come as such – sounds more like a theoretical gimmick than a truly feasible practice. The only conceivable situation would be if a whole group of people pooled their resources to buy a community console that then functions as a server – but this will probably be the exception rather than the rule.
