In ARK: Survival Evolved (PC, PS4, Xbox One) it is possible to swing onto a flying dinosaur and rise high into the sky. Here is a list of all flying dinosaurs that you can tame and ride in our Taming Guide.
The dream of flying comes true in ARK: Here you can tame flying creatures and ride them. This gives you advantages, such as faster movement. You can reach places that would be inaccessible from the ground. Flying dinosaurs are also capable of grabbing other creatures and carrying them away.

Taming Flying Dinosaurs – How to Do It and How to Use Them
We take a closer look at the flying dinosaurs. How do you tame them best, what do they like to eat, and how do they help you in the fight for survival?
Pteranodon
The Pteranodon belongs to the reptile family and is the first flying dinosaur available for you to ride and fly. It is not an aggressive dino and will flee as soon as you attack it.
If you steal an egg or the Pteranodon is with a partner, it will strike back and attack.
You can find the Pteranodon here: Generally, the flying dinosaur is one of the more common animals in ARK and is widely distributed. You can find it on The Island, Extinction, Genesis, The Center, Ragnarok, and Valguero.
Taming the Pteranodon
The Pteranodon is a shy creature and will flee as soon as you attack it. This makes it a bit harder to hit it from the ground and knock it out. To tame it, you need (as with all creatures) a “knock-out” strategy. It is best to use a bow and tranquilizer arrows.
Here’s how to knock out the Pteranodon: Wait until the Pteranodon lands to rest, take your bow with the tranquilizer arrows, and shoot the Pteranodon. One or two good hits are usually enough to knock it out. The higher the level, the more arrows you will need.
Since the Pteranodon has little health and takes additional damage from ranged attacks, it can sometimes happen that you accidentally kill it. Sometimes, a simple stone is enough.
This food is most effective for taming the Pteranodon: The Pteranodon prefers to eat regular Kibble.
As a carnivore, the Pteranodon also enjoys other meat snacks. It particularly likes raw mutton, raw prime meat, and cooked lamb chop. Especially raw mutton is very suitable for taming the Pteranodon. If you have none of these lying around, use raw meat.
Regular Kibble Recipe:
- 1 x Medium Egg
- 1 x Cooked Meat
- 2 x Corn
- 2 x Potatoes
- 5 x Fiber
- 1 x Water
On an official server, you need about 8 to 30 minutes for a level 1 Pteranodon. At level 150, taming can take between 1 and 5 hours.
How to Craft the Saddle
To fly the successfully tamed Pteranodon, you need a saddle. You can acquire the engram for this at level 28 for 15 points.
In your inventory, you can craft the saddle as follows:
- 230 x Leather
- 125 x Fiber
- 75 x Chitin
Utility of the Pteranodon
Scout: The Pteranodon is one of the fastest flying mounts in ARK Survival Evolved and is excellent as a scout to explore the area. It is worth leveling its stamina to make the most of its greatest strength.
Although the Pteranodon cannot carry much weight, it is still useful for mining valuable goods. Its flying speed allows it to easily fly over dangerous areas. If you want to use it as a miner, also level it up in weight.
Although the Pteranodon is essentially a classic “speed mount,” it also has some tricks up its sleeve when it comes to fighting and dealing damage. With practice, you can roll through opponents with the Pteranodon and destroy flak armor. It is possible to grab human targets and gain a significant advantage in battle. However, during this time, it is vulnerable and can be killed. For combat, level health, damage, stamina, and a bit of weight to use stronger gear.
