The mood on the internet can be very harsh. Everyone is right, everyone believes that the other is wrong, and only their own opinion counts. The developers of the MMORPG ARK: Survival Evolved recently faced some criticism, causing one of the team members to lose his temper.
The announcement of the Buy2Play addon Scorched Earth caused some discontent among the fans of the game. On Reddit and Discord, people even started to insult the developers for the decision to charge money for the expansion. Accusations were made that it was just reskins and that these should have been offered for free. They claimed that the fanbase had been alienated and that the game had been portrayed negatively outside the community.
Payment for work?
A member of the ARK QA team, “Wildcard Stark”, spoke up and stated that they were essentially creating a completely new game that exists alongside the previous one. The team deserved to be paid for their work. Moreover, the game was much closer to a release version than to an alpha. Then it got personal. He even directly attacked one of the critics, stating that the person was only angry because they were too fine to spend 20 dollars on a game that was actually worth 60 dollars and that had been offered far too cheaply from the start. If someone did not want to pay the money, that would be okay. Nobody was being held at gunpoint.
There followed an apology from the Wildcard employee. This was his first time working on a video game, and he was not used to the long working days. He had been under a lot of stress. He was very passionate about his work and took the hostility personally, as he believed that all the work would not receive recognition. He felt hurt, which led to frustration and he expressed that incorrectly. He would hold back in the future and treat the community differently.
