The latest expansion for ARK Survival Evolved introduces mushrooms that can cause hallucinations leading to death. They are not easy to recognize and sometimes appear out of nowhere.
ARK received the new DLC “Aberration” for PC, PS4, and Xbox One last week. It leans towards horror and body horror: everything is nice and slimy, voracious, with teeth and spores.
White on Red is okay, Red on Red is dead
A new element that came with the DLC is “red mushrooms.” The ARK wiki explains the fine distinction. They take great pride in being a survival game that takes reality seriously, so these red mushrooms have two different strains:
- the mushrooms with the pure white strain are harmless
- the mushrooms with a slightly red strain are deadly. They cause disorientation and uncontrollable diarrhea, and the player risks drowning. It’s quite a ridiculous, trippy, and undignified spectacle.
So this isn’t fun; it’s quite a dangerous story. The mushrooms release spores, from which one should remove oneself in time. The ARK wiki recommends that anyone wanting to collect biotoxins or experience a small trip can also pick the mushrooms with the red strain.
An antidote for this trip is to eat 9 brown mushrooms, which negate this effect.
This becomes particularly dangerous because there are likely some locations in Aberration where this mushroom effect can occur even without mushrooms. Players have already found “invisible, constantly hallucinating spots” and then tested this effect for a relatively long time with God Mode. It looks pretty cool.
