The Shadowmane is a true predator in ARK: Survival Evolved. With the release of Genesis: Part 2, the creature found its way into the game. The Shadowmane is a chimera and visually resembles a cross between a cat and a lion. In this MeinMMO guide, we will tell you how to tame the deadly feline quickly and easily.
This is the Shadowmane: The combat power of the Shadowmane is comparable to that of the Tyrannosaurus, making it perfect as a boss killer. Additionally, the creature can cloak itself, allowing for effective surprise attacks.
Even though the Shadowmane resembles a cat, it does not shy away from water – on the contrary: you can quickly and effortlessly traverse any body of water on its back. And as if that wasn’t enough, you take no fall damage when jumping from great heights while riding the Shadowmane. With so many strengths, it’s no surprise that taming it is not an easy task. Especially since the predator is tamed passively and does not need to be knocked out.
The Shadowmane was introduced with the second part of the ARK expansion Genesis.
Finding and taming the Shadowmane
How to find the Shadowmane: The territory of the Shadowmane is quite large and extends over the entire southwestern part of the “Genesis Part 2” map. You can also frequently find the hunters in the northwest. They often appear in groups of three.
Be aware that the creature will hunt you down using its cloaking ability. Traverse the area vigilantly and pay attention to paw prints and quiet sounds that the Shadowmane makes. In cloaking mode, you can only recognize the creature by its faint outlines, distorting the areas it conceals.
How to tame the Shadowmane: The Shadowmane primarily acts in packs, consisting of two to three animals. If you discover a group, try to isolate one animal from the group. Your best chances are during the day when the pack is sleeping. Equipped with a Ghillie Suit, sneak up on the creature from behind or the side. In the last slot of the hotbar, place a fish trap, which you can fill with any fish species. Make sure that the fish multiplier is at least 0.5+.
Depending on the level of the Shadowmane, you will need several filled fish traps – so make sure to have enough space in your inventory. Once you are close enough, an overlay will appear, and you can start the taming process.
Behavior after feeding: Once the Shadowmane has devoured your fish, it will immediately move away and look for a new resting spot. Track it via the in-game taming system. Sneak up on the sleeping Shadowmane again and feed it.
If the Shadowmane wakes up while you are approaching, take to your heels and move away as quickly as possible. After waking up, it takes a few seconds for the creature to become aggressive toward you. With a bit of luck, it will ignore you. If not, a further escape is not an option: with its enormous speed and teleportation ability, the Shadowmane will catch up to you in no time. Even with the advantages of Tek gear, you are most likely to survive a failed taming attempt through direct confrontation.
Factors that influence and ease the taming process
To tame the Shadowmane, you need a fish trap with appropriate bycatch. At this time, it is not known whether the level or the size of the fish increases taming efficiency. Ideally, large high-level fish are thrashing in your net.
In the second part of Genesis, there are also insects that make your life difficult. Apply insect repellent to fully concentrate on taming. However, other dinos can also be a threat to you. Scout the surroundings beforehand and ensure that no other predators are lurking nearby, waiting to snack on you.
The YouTuber “NicoDerProfi” explains in his video how you can tame the Shadowmane.
Checklist for the first taming of a Shadowmane
Even experienced ARK veterans should exercise caution when taming the Shadowmane. We have created a checklist for you that will increase your chances of a successful taming process:
- Bring enough fish traps with fish
- Wear a Ghillie Suit
- Use insect repellent
- Avoid groups – better to tame a single Shadowmane
- Tame the creature during the day when it is sleeping
- Ensure there are no other predators nearby
- Run away quickly when the Shadowmane wakes up
With these seven tips, you are on the safe side and have better chances of capturing the Shadowmane.
The abilities of the Shadowmane
The Shadowmane has natural armor that depends on its level. Therefore, you don’t need to craft a saddle, and you can directly swing onto the back of the chimera. Your new companion has very strong abilities, which we will introduce to you in detail:
- Stealth Mode: When activated, nearby allies are briefly camouflaged as well.
- Warp Attack: If you hold down the secondary attack, the Shadowmane performs a warp attack that can target multiple enemies.
- Sprint Attack: Tapping the secondary attack will execute a sprint attack on a single opponent.
