Arena of Valor is a kind of mobile version of League of Legends (LoL). In Asia, the title as “Honor of Kings” helps the giant Tencent drive revenue to dizzying heights.
If a game is so popular that the Chinese government enacts laws to prevent an addiction epidemic among children and adolescents, then that is something special and somewhat concerning.
The mobile MOBA “Honor of Kings” was honored in China with this title in July 2017. That is the flip side of the coin. The front side, the popular side of Honor of Kings: The mobile MOBA is incredibly successful. How popular the game is can be seen in the business figures of the China giant Tencent.
2.2 billion US dollars with mobile, 84% increase compared to the previous year
With mobile games, Tencent has already made a lot of money in recent years, but in Q3 2017, Honor of Kings took it to the next level. Tencent attributes a large part of the enormous growth in mobile games to the MOBA. The game has over 160 million registered users.
In total, mobile games have generated 2.2 billion US dollars for Tencent. An increase of 84% compared to the previous year.
The European version of Honor of Kings is called Arena of Valor and runs on iOS and Android – we have already introduced it. The game is set to be released for the Nintendo Switch.

Tencent generates more revenue than these 4 giant publishers in the West
The revenues from Tencent’s PC games like LoL also skyrocketed in Q3.
In total, the quarter was incredibly strong for Tencent. Revenue from PC and mobile games has risen to 4.95 billion US dollars. As Asia expert Daniel Ahmad notes, this is more than Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Take Two and Ubisoft combined in Q3 2017.
Interestingly, these higher revenues come with a shrinking player base. The number of monthly active users has decreased by 3.8%, according to the figures.
