Epics MOBA Paragon closed its doors in April 2018. But as they say, dead men tell no tales. Thus, it is making a comeback now – in the form of 4 new games.
Why was Paragon discontinued? Fans of Paragon believed that the success of the Battle Royale Fortnite was to blame for Epic Games having to shut down the MOBA on April 26, 2018.
According to Epic Games, the MOBA simply did not resonate with players long-term. While it was quite popular at first, only a small fraction of players stuck around. The small fanbase that remained could not justify another operation of Paragon. Therefore, Epic Games discontinued the title.
From Paragon come 4 new MOBAs
What happened next? Epic Games took the assets of the MOBA and packaged them into the Unreal Engine Asset Store. There, they were made available for free to anyone who wanted to work with the engine.
What came from the assets? Currently, at least four MOBAs are in development that utilize the assets from Paragon:
- Fault
- Predecessor
- CORE
- Overprime
Fault is set to launch in Early Access on July 17 through Steam. You will compete in 5v5 matches and gradually unlock new heroes. Fault uses a so-called Feats system, where you become stronger in a match by achieving certain milestones.
Predecessor starts a Closed Alpha on July 10, for which you can sign up through the website, and features the well-known Paragon heroes Feng Mao, Gadget, Muriel, Murdock, and Sevarog. The classic MOBA is expected to be expanded with additional game modes.
CORE has been in development since 2018, but it has gone quite silent about the game for about a year. The website is also no longer accessible. It relies on the well-known MOBA formula but aimed to modernize things a bit – with faster gameplay and other secret changes.
Overprime feels like a mix of Paragon and Overwatch. The game is still in a fairly early development stage. However, you can already download it through the website and participate in the tests.
It will surely be interesting to see how much these games ultimately differ from each other and which one can win the favor of the players.
