What is Broken Ranks? Broken Ranks is a new MMORPG from Poland. The game offers the following unique features:
- A dark atmosphere reminiscent of games like The Witcher
- Isometric view
- Real-time exploration of the game world
- Turn-based combat
- Beautifully drawn locations
Overall, the old-school style of the game is reminiscent of the now-defunct browser game Herokon-Online. Additionally, there is more information available on the developers’ website.
Setting, combat system, and beta of Broken Ranks
What is the setting of Broken Ranks? The world of Broken Ranks is dark and brutal. Your heroes are the survivors of the shattered realm of Taern. This nation was crushed by the invasion of the Utorian hordes, and it is among your tasks to gather the survivors and ensure their survival.
The game is based on another game called “Pride of Taern” from the developer studio Whitemoon. We have compiled some screenshots from the game here for you in a gallery:
What can we expect from the battles? According to the developers, a unique system is employed here. On the world map, you run around in real time, but when it comes to combat, the game switches to a special combat mode. Everything takes place in a turn-based manner.
Before each round, all participants have 10 seconds to plan their actions. Then, it gets exciting. A similar system was used in the colorful cyberpunk game Atlas Reactor.
What classes are available? Broken Ranks offers you a choice of 7 classes, which you can further upgrade. There are:
- Barbarian
- Ranger
- ‘Sheed’ (a kind of Kung-Fu warrior)
- Druid
- Voodoo Shaman
- Fire Mage
- Knight
For which platforms is the game coming? According to the developers, Broken Ranks will be released for PC, Mac, iPhones, and Android devices, and will allow cross-platform play.
What is the situation with the beta? A release date is not yet known, but from May 14 to May 30, 2021, you can participate in a beta. However, this will only be available on PC. You can access the beta via the developers’ Whitemoon homepage (via Brokenranks.com).
This game is intriguing
As I was writing the news on Broken Ranks, I found myself more and more excited about the game. There is much that appeals to me, including the dark style, the setting, and the turn-based battles, which I enjoyed in Atlas Reactor.
Therefore, I have already signed up for the beta and hope for a key. Curiously, my colleague Benedikt Schlotmann feels the same way, who also got excited about the game while proofreading this article.
Of course, we cannot say at this point whether Broken Ranks will meet expectations and become a good game. But what has been shown so far is already intriguing for the upcoming beta.
